Pros
It was a very enjoyable and inclusive place to work on a day-to-day basis. Environment was relaxed (but maybe too relaxed). Everyone was very friendly and we always shared in each other's successes. There was a sense of mission about what we were doing and why we were doing it. I had an opportunity to wear a lot of different hats in my job, and expand my skill set beyond what I had been doing for years in the private sector.
Cons
While the sense of mission was strong, the "how" of implementing it was a continual problem. What was really needed was a long-term strategic commitment to build our credibility in the marketplace and get everyone on board with that. But we seemed to jump from one initiative to another, and that left many confused about where we were really headed. Meanwhile, old contracts were expiring with no new work to replace them, and as a result we were letting staff go, and the organization's finances were in bad shape.
