Pros

- Great Culture - Since 2019 it's getting worse until 2020, became the worst - Cool Office - Unfortunately, they lost all their offices - Great Talented People - Most of them were laid off recently

Cons

- They recently fired 35-40% of Unbabel’s workforce, causing almost 100 people to lose their job in the middle of a pandemic and national state of emergency, with only 2 weekdays of notice, no unemployment benefits. - High turnover - They hire and fire people so fast - Management doesn't care about people (They will always say they do). - Lots of politics and egos between teams and within the same teams - I was laid off although I was the top performer in my team. - Salaries below market rate.

Hi former Unbabeler, Thank you for writing an honest review; we really appreciate constructive feedback in order to improve as a company. We would like to go through some of your concerns. The last few weeks have been the most challenging in our history. The global pandemic brought about by the coronavirus has not only impacted the way we live and work, it has affected the business world and the global economy in an unprecedented way. Our business, like most startups, is built on growth. The global recession brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted this growth, forcing companies across the majority of verticals to reduce their spending. So, we've had to make the hard decision of restructuring our business and, in doing so, to part ways with several Unbabelers. We’re incredibly grateful for the valuable contribution all our employees have made to building this company, so we provided a competitive leaving package that would take care of those people who were impacted during this difficult time. This decision, although incredibly hard, is an investment in the future existence of our business so we can continue to bring value to our customers and create the world's translation layer. When you mention turnover, indeed the Covid-19 situation had a big impact on this. We monitor our turnover carefully, to ensure that we minimize the rate. Not everyone can be the right fit at the right time, so when we unfortunately have to part ways with our employees, we have frequent meetings with all managers to assess monthly performance while using necessary mechanisms to support our employees, and only when we have exhausted those processes do we decide to sever the tie. Our management team is highly invested in taking care of our employees; we are continuing to invest in creating a feedback culture, that, with the introduction of our new performance management system, will enable us to keep closer tabs on performance and personal objectives. We incentivize managers to meet regularly with employees on a 1-1 basis, and have been developing a clear communication plan for all decisions that affect the company. Regarding the topic of politics and egos, it’s impossible to say you’re 100% wrong, because teams are made of people, and people are not machines. That said, having a common goal - our mission - has allowed us to keep focused on what’s important for Unbabelers, the company and our customers. Lastly, regarding salary benchmarking, we have recently done one and although it’s always a work in progress, we remain committed to reducing any salary inequalities and striving for a fair and competitive salary package. We sincerely wish you the best of luck in your new challenge, The Unbabel People Team

Pros

One of the best things about working for Unbabel is the accessibility of the project managers. They are always great at answering any questions and clearing up any details to make sure you are able to finish your tasks appropriately. The variety of domains also keeps everything fresh. It can be healthcare, IT, e-commerce, or anything else!

Cons

The work flow is unpredictable. Sometimes I can get assignments regularly every week but then I may go through a dry spell of several months before getting another assignment.
