Pros
I had to use this box of (pros) because there is no room to put all my reviews, since they don't have any pros for this company —if I could give it -10. I will
With 25 years in hotel operations, this was by far the most challenging and concerning environment I have worked in.The CEO lacks hotel operational experience and provides little to no operational guidance. Feedback is primarily critical rather than developmental. Property-level management has minimal autonomy. All departments must report to corporate office personnel, limiting the GM’s ability to make independent decisions.
Purchasing decisions are often made at the corporate level without proper knowledge. Later, those expenses are reflected in property financial reviews, creating unrealistic performance expectations.
Cons
Financial Practices
Forecasting and budgeting processes are inconsistent. Revenue targets are set at levels that are not operationally attainable, while expenses are expected to match those projections. This creates financial pressure without realistic support or strategy.
Crisis Management
During my 2.5 years, I handled three guest suicides on the property. In each case, I managed the situation directly with families and law enforcement without corporate support. These situations require structured crisis response systems, which were not in place.
HR & Workplace Culture
There is effectively no functional HR support at the property level. Serious concerns, such as harassment or discrimination,n are not handled transparently. Performance reviews and structured compensation discussions for senior management do not occur regularly.
After two years of service, I requested a formal performance review and potential salary discussion. I was informed that reviews are not standard practice for General Managers.
Safety Concerns
There were prolonged periods where elevator inspections and certifications were reportedly not up to date. Mechanical and maintenance work is often handled by individuals without clear third-party verification of licensing or certification.
Pest control issues (including roaches and bedbugs) were ongoing concerns.
Management Philosophy
In my experience, developing a positive and engaged team culture was not encouraged. When employee morale improved and engagement increased, corporate leadership appeared uncomfortable with strong property-level loyalty and cohesion.
