Honorable work, too bureaucratic and managed from the top down - HSCP Plan Manager Vermont Adult Learning Employee Review

Pros

For the most part, the staff at VAL are all wonderful people. They are compassionate, smart, and socially conscious.

Cons

The organization is run from the top down with new policies not reflecting the reality of the work being done on the ground or the lives of the students. VAL has slowly turned into a "Boys Club" especially in upper management while staff who identify as women are predominantly the educators - the gender disparity throughout the organization is problematic. There are no opportunities for promotion, training requests are forgotten about and never fulfilled, and they have a tendency to hire from the outside rather than promoting seasoned staff. I left because I am emotionally burnt out from the policy changes, the lack of support, and the professional stagnation. I really wanted VAL to be my career, it's ending as a dead end.

Pros

I've been with VAL for 2.5 years so far and am proud to work with such compassionate and talented people. I feel supported, respected, and entrusted to apply my skills and ideas to the position, programs, and overall organizational infrastructure. Our current Executive Director is a staunch advocate for VAL students, staff, and programming.

Cons

Nothing in particular comes to mind

Pros

It was a great place to work for until recently. Great coworkers, But not worth the emotional toll.

Cons

New CFO is destroying the student centered culture we had. The board members and TB are in collusion to get rid of the people that have worked there the longest. I was there for over 20 years and I had to resign due to the hostile work environment. It hurt to leave because of my students, But the toxicity the CFO has created, has caused anxiety in every staff member throughout VAL. It's not worth the emotional toll leadership imposes on everyone. Look elsewhere. For your own sanity, go somewhere else. Students are the last thing in their minds.
