Pros
I've worked at many companies, from very large multinationals to small ones and ViaSat is just about the right size for me. I get good feedback and support from my team and management. My opinions and suggestions are taken seriously. The people I work with are more uniformly intelligent and motivated than any other place I've been. Management is approachable and open - something not always found in some companies... When I needed training, I was told to line up whatever I needed. I did, and it was all approved - no questions, no complaints. The benefits are very good and I'm quite happy with them.
Cons
Not quite a downside, but the stated company policy is to stay slightly understaffed. This allows the company to, for the most part, avoid layoffs. The downside of course, is that we do have to work harder to take up the slack. I've been with the company over 2 years and have not seen any layoffs in that time. Some of the people in my department talk about a small layoff that happened a year or so before I started. The rate of hiring has slowed considerably, but that is not unexpected given the state of the economy. The fact that we are still hiring at all is a good indicator. One other "problem" is that org charts are officially discouraged. While I understand the philosophy that we don't want to limit anyone by putting them in a "box", it does make it difficult at times to tell who to go to when you need to ask questions or seek approval.
