Pros

State Job with good benefits that are very comprehensive, flexible/alternate schedules are available, generous paid holidays even after you take into account the winter furlough, and good job security.

Cons

The nature of academics is to be very status-conscious which leads to some coworkers being unintentionally demeaning to people with lesser educational achievements. Very understaffed with a lot of personalities in play.

Pros

The experience was great. The PI was amazing and kind and I learned a lot, definitely would do it again. It yielded great results for me such as publication. I recommend for medical school or graduate school.

Cons

Difficult to justify if you don’t plan to have a research career, graduate or professional school because the pay is lower than other positions available in Blacksburg.
