Pros

Rewarding work, ability to help lift the community

Cons

This is contract work, because the ministry offsets the work to private contractors every 5 to 6 years, it is the contractor who determines wages, the pay scale is very uneven at different locations, even though the responsibilities are the same. I currently work for a contractor that pays me the same as a new employee to the industry with no experience, even though I have more than 10 years of experience at WorkBC. Some contractors provide very limited benefits compared to others. The worst part after stagnant pay is the total lack of training for WorkBC staff , for most of these contractors, the WorkBC contracts is just another stream of revenue to support the contractor's larger interest, it is not invested in WorkBC. When training is provided it is done for the Contractor's entire organization which in many instances has no relevance to WorkBC responsibilities. Unfortunately, the ministry does not actively offer specialized training to improve staff at the centers even though they continue to add new services which creates more administrative responsibilities, there is too much unnecessary repetition and redundancy. WorkBC is also expanding more programs to the public at a rate that is still not match by training nor compensation, while the optics are great for the public, it is causing burnout to staff and it is increasing turnover at a rate I have never seen in my 20 years of working in this sector. Most of these centers are now a place for new graduates to get some experience and leave, without new immigrants and older employees, this service will be entirely understaff or staffed with unqualified personnel.

Pros

Meaningful work, good coworkers, benefits

Cons

inconsistent/poor training, overworked, expectations of management do not meet reality, little effective support, set up to fail in many areas, no overtime but workload is impossible to keep up with within allotted time, thankless at times, mental health hazardous, punished for the mistakes of others/ things you have no control over, corporate culture rather than people-centered
