Pros

Location in Suzhou is very good (for China) and campus is arguably one of the most modern in China (relatively average internationally)

Cons

Complete ignorance towards contractual obligations: Job advertisements, website content, employment contract, HR communications and induction materials provide consistent promises (including legally binding contractual terms) regarding allowances, benefits and salaries. These are completely ignored in reality. Most allowances and benefits are not provided and final gross earnings may be up 25% below the contract amount. HR literally unresponsive to inquiries and as a non-UK institution you can't take them to court to get your entitlements. Several great faculty members. But overwhelming sense of discontent. Turnover is very high with significant number (perhaps majority) not finishing contract period. Don't waste your time or money to come out here

Pros

Aesthetically pleasant campus and a vibrant environment at the SIP campus. The library has very good resources.

Cons

My experience as a foreign professor at XJTLU has been extraordinarily negative. The management of my division has fostered a culture of fear and punishment, undermining operational capabilities, stifling research output, and eroding morale to the point that eight full-time professors—all foreigners—are leaving this summer alone. International faculty have been systematically excluded from leadership roles, teaching assignments are constantly reshuffled to an impossible degree, and with the division unable to hire replacements, remaining staff have been told to expect exponentially heavier workloads in the coming semesters. If you are an international scholar considering XJTLU: don’t. I wish I had been warned before making the decision to relocate here.
