Pros

Incredibly talented and mission-driven colleagues. Strong compensation and excellent benefits. There are many smart, hardworking people across the organization who genuinely care about the work and the communities the mission is meant to serve.

Cons

I wish I had read the Glassdoor reviews before accepting this role. I remember being genuinely excited to join XQ and to be part of an organization that's part of Emerson Collective. At the time, it felt like a dream opportunity — the pay and benefits were strong, but what attracted me most was the mission and what I believed would be a thoughtful, values-driven environment. Unfortunately, almost immediately after starting, I sensed that something was off. The environment often felt tense, and it seemed like many people were walking on eggshells. There were frequent whispers, side comments, and a general undercurrent of fear and dysfunction that made it difficult to feel secure or supported. In my experience, the workplace culture was chaotic and unhealthy. I witnessed colleagues being spoken to in ways that felt demeaning and disrespectful, and it often seemed like leadership was aware of these dynamics but failed to meaningfully address them. I also experienced communication that felt confusing, dismissive, and at times gaslighting. What made the experience especially disappointing was how disconnected the internal culture felt from the organization’s stated mission. I came in believing deeply in the work, but my time there was incredibly taxing and had a negative impact on my well-being. I hope future candidates do their research, ask direct questions about culture and leadership, and pay close attention to the patterns described by former employees. For me, this was a deeply disappointing experience and one I would caution others to consider carefully before accepting a role.

Pros

Unique approach. Intensely ambitious vision and mission. I have never seen an intersection of different skills and backgrounds of people taking on such a big challenge of reimagining High Schools in America. The mission is #1 and is a very powerful way of adding meaning to ones work. If you are intellectually curious, want to stretch, love a culture of excellence and are a builder and problem solver — you can do well at XQ.

Cons

All the experts in the room can be intimidating and sometimes hard to get a word in. This is not a 9-5, phone it in job and it can be very demanding . All work will be challenged, on the merit— so no room for mediocrity. That takes getting used too. That is not really a con for me, but reading some other highly biased (and bitter) reviews published here on Glassdoor— know that some mediocre folks got through and they are big mad.

Pros

The mission is genuinely compelling, and many colleagues are talented, dedicated people who care deeply about improving education. The work itself has real potential to matter.

Cons

The workplace culture is shaped almost entirely by erratic and volatile behavior from the CEO. Staff were routinely subjected to outbursts — both in private and in front of colleagues. The environment created chronic anxiety, emotional distress, and, in some cases, more serious harm to staff wellbeing. During my time there, I personally observed what appeared to be impairment during work hours on more than one occasion. This was not an isolated incident and was witnessed by multiple staff members. Financial decisions were frequently difficult to understand. Significant resources — from an annual budget of roughly $60 million — went to consultants whose work was never implemented. A grant application was lost after a staff member submitted false information and was subsequently terminated. Turnover is extremely high. Talented people leave consistently and quickly, citing the same reasons: unsustainable conditions, unclear strategy, and a culture focused on appearance over impact. Many departing employees sign nondisclosure agreements as part of their severance — something worth noting when reading reviews here. The board has been aware of these patterns for years. No meaningful corrective action has followed.
