Pros
Great benefits & pension system. Many hard-working employees who really care about what they do. Employees are very generous at helping co-workers in need.
Cons
Constant budget shortfalls strain an already understaffed workforce. One of the main problems with the city is they have many upper-level supervisors and department directors that are simply very bad managers who have the mentality that everyone is replaceable so why worry about employee satisfaction? This has led to a generally unhappy workforce. The city wastes money filling vacant positions rather than investing in retaining the great employees they already have. It is pretty sad that a brand new employee with limited experience can be hired at up to midpoint of a salary range; however, loyal, great performing employees, who already have a wealth of knowledge and can hit the ground running, are only allowed to receive the beginning of a salary range or a 10 - 15% increase over their current salary when promoted. There is something seriously wrong with this regulation.
