Pros

Zapier embodies its stated values. Every day it felt like this was a place set up to make us all excited to come to work, a company able to introspect and make big changes, and one populated with empathetic, clever, and driven individuals. The in-person retreats feel like family gatherings. It is well above the industry average in its diversity and continued efforts to improve. The problem space is hugely important. Zapier is helping non-technical information workers to automate parts of their workflows, without learning to code, so they can focus on the higher-order efforts. It’s not positioned as a black box. Users can understand how it works and over time apply it to more problems, making it a flexible and powerful tool. There is a tonne of opportunity for growth, both in technical roles and leadership. I have seen colleagues move from Support into Engineering, engineers successfully change functional expertise (eg. BE to AppSec), and others grow to oversee an entire department at the Staff level. There is a clear career growth framework, structured growth planning, and individuals who have walked the same path to call on. The company is serious about learning and development, backing that up with ample resources and personal budget. The leadership in Engineering is plugged in and people-first. The VP of Engineering is among the most talented and inspirational leaders I’ve ever known, and has deftly navigated the department through the considerable change that coincides with an ambitious, rapidly growing company.

Cons

Be mindful when considering Zapier that most senior leadership resides in the western half of North America. I worked in EMEA and had evening synchronous calls throughout the week.

Pros

The interviews were low-stress, and it really seemed like everyone I interviewed with wanted me to succeed. Onboarding was no different. There was a lot of great documentation, and everyone wanted to help in any way possible to make the transition a smooth one.

Cons

The only "con" I can think of is that there is a TON to read. That also means that there is a ton of reference material so not terrible.

Pros

- Great colleagues, with very few exceptions. - Flexible hours. - Modern tech stack.

Cons

- In my opinion, leadership decisions often created organizational challenges. - During a CNN interview, the CNN host asked the CEO to explain an answer he gave 'in layman's terms' and I don't think I've ever appreciated an interview follow-up question as much as I appreciated that one (check out 'Zapier CNN' on YouTube). I took Spanish in HS and when I hear people actually speaking it, I catch some of it but not all of it. That's often how I felt when listening to the CEO speak or when I read his company-wide messages. - From my POV, has a 'throw everything at the wall and see what sticks' approach. - CEO seems to think power users are reflective of all users. - In my opinion, CEO responses to challenging questions from employees felt dismissive. I can't say I sensed much humility. - There is a push to "build" with AI that felt oppressive to me. I use AI frequently but I think Zapier has taken it to another level. It would have been tolerable had I seen an effort to tie the "building and shipping" to business results. Maybe that effort was happening but if it was I was not aware of it. I was certainly aware of the AI push. Maybe it was just me but I started to get a 'resistance is futile' vibe.
