Pros

Really friendly teams and staff across the company and accomodating to my needs as i finish writing my PhD. Excellent training opportunities - people are very proactive about finding opportunities and projects for you. As an intern you get to move throughout the company and experience lots of different teams.

Cons

Technical processes are often contracted out to consultants so it's not always easy to incorporate technical skills and development in to every day work. It works off banded pay system so it's not easy to get promotions or bonuses.

The Environment Agency take care of their employees very well. Good benefits, great pension, 30 days leave after 6 years, with flexi time you can work when you want.

Cons

Pay is very poor and you are reliant on allowances and overtime to top up your pay, which could be taken away at any time. Senior management have represented employees very poorly through the years and allowed pay to be suppressed. They have not fought hard enough for better pay. As a result staff are leaving in their droves and current employees are expected to take on extra work. Once you reach G6 there is nowhere to go as there aren't many posts above G6 and when a G7 post comes up it's very hard to get and they are usually awarded based on relationships rather than competence and experience.
