The ultimate clique

Pros

Making a genuine difference to young people's lives.

Cons

As a former Registered Manager at Esland, I had a pretty tough time, mainly because of the really cliquey culture there. It made it hard to settle in and often felt quite isolating. On top of that, there was a serious lack of proper induction and guidance. I was basically left to get on with complex responsibilities without much support, which really affected how well I could do my job.

A good company to work for.

Pros

A lot has been done over the past year to recruit full teams and have good managers at all the homes. Support services are good. Senior managers know the homes. Pay is the same or better than most other care organisations as far as I can see.

Cons

The working conditions and shifts are similar or better to other companies so it is hard to say.

Pros

I am maybe bias, but I have an amazing team, who without them, my home would not be where it is today, they are not only passionate, dedicated and nurturing, they are supportive to both the young people in our care but also to each other too. My team and I have supported a number of young people with achieving their positive outcomes in a loving, warm, homely environment which we have all worked hard to create. It can of course be hard work but do this together and we work to ensure your own resilience is good so that we are in the best position to care for our young people. Our region has a great clinical lead who is passionate on achieving the outcomes and supportive in helping to reach their goals Biggest pro - the children we care for and the positive memories we create with them and for them

Cons

On occasions, have felt unappreciated and have watched a number of other managers be highlighted who have since long gone, our region in particular got left behind and forgotten, however, I also don't do this job for that purpose so it was no big issue for me, but more for my team. I have always made up for this for them where I can. Since the appointment of the new CEO and CPO there has been changes and this is improving, with not only more recognition but a more child focused approach. Of course, as Managers we always complete lessons learnt, but it is great to see the organisation take this approach too.

Pros

Great regular training opportunities Qualifications Progression in your career Opportunities Approachable managers, Better pay than most care roles What's not to love. Opportunities to move to other areas as homes spread over the UK.

Cons

Not many cons... You have to get on with others or its not for you. But everyone is welcoming overtime normally available somewhere within the company if you want it.

Pros

Could be good at times

Cons

Exploitation of staff, forcing them to stay up all night dealing with incidents and then work the next day with no sleep. Fully in the knowledge I’d driven the length of the country and been up all night dealing with incidents, they send me as the only driver on another trip the length of the country, where I was again kept up all night. When I said I felt too tired to drive and it was unsafe, I was ignored. Instead of offering a hotel or something they insisted I drive back, endangering myself and the children we look after. This kind of thing happened ALL. THE. TIME. Shameful company who take money that’s supposed to go to the kids and keep it for themselves to increase profits. Constant slashing of budgets and promotion of “yes men” managers with no experience, who just did whatever senior management wanted, at the expense of everyone else.

Pros

Some lovely people and obviously the kids

Cons

Some really inexperienced managers don't have level 5 and just creep round the higher managers and they do all their work for them or we do it and they take the praise

Pros

No more than 2 children in each crisis home at any one time Always 2 to 1 staffing on shift No all crisis homes have children residing there now due to staffing (many care companies wouldn’t care) 9 month training plan Best SACW rates in the country Varied and wide ranging outdoor activity training program A sanctuary for the countries most challenging children Fantastic staff teams and supportive senior managers

Cons

Long days and not for the feint hearted but for strong people, you can make a huge difference.

Pros

I've been at Esland 3 years & 9 months and can honestly say I've never been happier in a place of employment. I started out working in the homes after working as a prison officer for close to 3 years, and I really struggled to feel like I fit in or find a rhythm with the job. A few years after I started I was diagnosed with Autism and the company did struggle at first to help support me with that. Eventually though they managed to find a role that fit my needs and since then I've been able to expand my skill set and develop some great relationships throughout the organisation. Despite a rough start I have no problem with saying that Esland definitely took my feedback on board, learnt from the past and made positive changes that suited me. I now feel like I am where I should be and feel like I'm making a difference (Perhaps indirectly) to our young people, by giving the homes the tools to do what they need to do and ultimately make peoples lives easier. The team I was placed in were welcoming and kind and so easy to work with that I felt I'd been with them for years. The manager/s I worked under were incredibly supportive and understanding and have really helped me learn more, not only about my role and how the company works but have helped me in terms of my diagnosis and finding ways to manage my triggers. Esland have done very well in my books over the last year and personally don't have anything to gripe about. There have been a lot of changes over a short space of time but a lot of these i feel are for the better - for example in all my time here whilst working in the homes I'd never met a CEO or COO. Now I have met both. It's really refreshing to see exec level managers taking an interest in the front line & support staff and having actual conversations with them.

Cons

Going into the experiences I had in my first few years with Esland would be a misrepresentation of everything that's changed and all that's been done for me and I really don't want to over shadow how helpful and accommodating everyone has been. I would say that sometimes things get so busy and hectic that people forget to not only listen to and take care of themselves, but each other as well. I think it's very easy to get burnt out in this industry no matter what role you undertake. However, that's not necessarily a con, as it's the world we're in, it's what we sign up for and you have to accept that and adapt. The only thing I would say is that I get the impression that a lot of the support staff feel underpaid for the amount of work they do (This isn't a personal thing, it's what I've picked up on). Again it's one of those things where it's very easy to focus on the homes because that's where it all happens and ultimately that's what we're here for, but as we open more and more homes the support staff work load builds and I think they're feeling the pressure a little bit without compensation.

Pros

Supportive and approachable ethos across all departments I have the best manager I have had in a long time and I have been in this sector for twenty years A growing organisation with opportunity to grow and develop My work colleagues! We are striving to improve quality and always become better The Quality team! The amazing clinical team who also offer 1;1 support if needed to all of our employees Having worked for a previous organisation who really didnt care how staff were treated or were feeling, it is refreshing to feel valued, listened too and appreciated Good salaries and competitive rates for junior staff

Cons

Currently going through a period of stabilisation/transformation which is a great thing but we need staff to remain and work through this with us and to understand/trust this process
