Best company I've ever worked at

Pros

1. Immense growth opportunities. Promotion and compensation structures are tied directly to performance, and management genuinely cares about progressing your career. 2. Salaries are high compared to jobs in the industry/location 3. The Exec team is open to feedback and genuinely wants to meet and get to know their employees. 4. The company strategy is one of long term growth. The CEO is very ambitious and determined to reach the unicorn status. 5. Snacks in the office, happiness funds, company off-sites, team builders, swag, 6. Great medical benefits and other compensation packages 7. Management is understanding of personal issues and commitments. 8. Friendly, welcoming, and happy environment.

Cons

1. Growing pains found in most startups. The team has scaled very quickly this past year. Management is learning, reacting, and committing to driving better operational efficiency. 2. This company is growing fast! That means employees are expected to work quickly. This can be stressful at times, but this is a startup. I've never grown more professionally than I have here because of it. If you are looking to take it easy, this is not the place.

Pros

Really exciting time at the company, with some incredible deals coming down the pipeline. Plenty of opportunities to step out beyond your core role and contribute in other areas of the company. The mindset of management is changing for the better. Coupled with some fantastic new hires, it's all making for a successful enterprise behemoth in the works. Excited to see where this company is headed.

Cons

Being a startup, at times things can be a bit chaotic. The company could do better by defining more processes, which is in the works.

Pros

Great office space, paid healthcare and benefits, excellent snacks, friendly onboarding.

Cons

I experienced an insidious culture of fear and distrust at this company. My fears were then realized when ALL of the Marketing team were let go in mid-April without any warning whatsoever. The timing and manner in which this was done was highly unprofessional, and frankly...cruel. The root of the problem lies in a dysfunctional leadership style at the highest level. The executive leadership was ineffective, immature and disingenuous. Communication was especially difficult with execs, as they were overly-analytical, and unable to reach concrete decisions. Feedback to our team was contradictory and confusing. Despite this stumbling block, we were still able to exceed our goals, with stellar metrics to prove it. A pervasive "bro" culture exists throughout Sales and Engineering. I saw many examples of aggressive, hostile, and overly competitive behavior, which was always tolerated, and often encouraged. You never knew when the next disrespectful comment or challenge was coming your way, often from someone with far less experience and knowledge. There is very little diversity throughout the company, especially at the management level. I'll just leave that there. Working at Expanse was one of the worst experiences I've had during my long career in Silicon Valley. I've never felt so unappreciated and discarded. Next time I will dedicate my industry knowledge to a more progressive and mature company.

Best company I've ever worked for, best work I've ever done

Pros

- We are doing important work that I believe in. - Management cares about employees and spends extra time ensuring that employees are well compensated, and recognized for their work. - The company is transparent about everything – over-communication is the norm - Everyone has incredibly high expectations for the work product produced, but that has led me to do the best work I've ever done in my life. - "Data-driven" is not buzzword around here. Decisions are made based on what the data suggests (and, more importantly, have been reversed when the data no longer supports them). - I've worked at companies with very smart people, but they don't hold a candle to the people at Expanse, who challenge and inspire me everyday. At the same time, folks at Expanse are grounded and not ego-driven. - There's an expectation that when you're on PTO, you actually take PTO – I've been chastised (jokingly, but they meant it) for responding to emails while I was on PTO. - Most of the time, a good work-life balance. - Fully-stocked kitchen and company-provided lunches everyday are nice perks - Benefits are great

Cons

- Workloads can get heavy at times because we're growing quickly, but managers and executives are cognizant of that.

Pros

Leading technology and a product that is differentiated in the market. No one does what we do. Exciting place to be as the company grows rapidly. You will never be bored! The vibe in the office is positive and everyone generally seems to like to come to work every day.

Cons

Typical start up stuff. Some junior hires were handed management roles way too soon in their careers. Now that the company is growing - there is a need to either let the more junior people have time to grow into their roles or hire more experienced leadership across the board who have seen this type of scale.

Pros

Excellent engineers and coworkers. Empathetic leadership that shows it through actions rather than words. Compensation is weighted towards top performers. An opportunity to create a new market vertical. Tim and Matt (the co-founders) treat employees exceptionally well. Executive leadership mostly knows what they are doing. Tech debt is minimal relative to similar companies. Top-notch compensation.

Cons

Very high turnover in some teams (marketing and product management) and those functions are still poorly run. There are some high-strung divas throughout the org.
