It was great while it lasted

Pros

Work life balance was great for me but it really depends on who you report to. Benefits were alright but the vision plan could be a little better. Managing partners do not force you to go back to the office, they give you full autonomy on your work situation. You could go fully remote or hybrid.

Cons

The company lacks A LOT of culture. Given the fully remote option, you don't get a chance to connect with people a lot and even if you're in the office, everyone's scattered and all over the place. It's extremely challenging to make friends at the Firm. Partners are extremely opinionated individuals and often times, they make you feel uncomfortable speaking up in meetings. The reporting structure is very different from other industry sectors that I've worked for (consulting, accounting, etc.), going back to to opinionated individuals, you have to go through many layers of senior management in order to push an initiative or get anything done. Project timelines get pushed to a few quarters back and also, the I.T. team was not helpful at all for the time I was there. Most of the time, they weren't friendly to me. What's worst is that the Firm does not invest in technology, I'm surprised they use such an outdated system for expenses and also for their intraweb. There are ZERO corporate perks with this company. You don't get any discounts whatsoever from the Firm. This one was a shocker to me given Fasken is one of the biggest law firms in Canada. Admin staff are also NOT entitled to bonuses, talk about being "inclusive". There is however, a Christmas bonus at the end of the year but it's peanuts compared to the bonuses given out to non-admin staff.

Pros

It's an elite environment, but it has a kindness and human orientation. Lots of people who left and came back, and lots of long-career people. Work life balance is encouraged and there are lots of opportunities to connect and bond with coworkers. Benefits are generous and supportive.

Cons

Not the most agile place, not everyone always pulls in the same direction. There's inconsistency and inefficiencies that result. The firm performs at a lower level than it could be performing at.

Pros

Collaborative, impactful projects that are great skill set and resume builders, wonderful team, engaged lawyers. A wonderful place to learn from the best and to amp up your own personal brand. Wonderful Partners and clients to network and explore options for career growth.

Cons

Things may have changed since 2019, but the marketing division worked around the clock. The priority of pitches and files superseded employees personal time including vacation. The higher the position you were in the more time you gave to the organization. Staff below management were able to bank overtime to use later, but that was not according to middle management and ultimately all responsibilities for vacation coverage for both staff and Directors hits the middle manager. There is no work life balance, and the compensation isn't at market value for the amount of time that is put in to succeed positively.
