Business is bad

Pros

Flexible hours, perks including Bupa healthcare and good pension... although these are largely given by Omnicom.

Cons

Flamingo had an amazing reputation as a leading global agency but under its current leadership it has in recent years been ripped apart. It resembles nothing of the agency it once was and the company has been restructured a few times within this short period to suit the changing taste and growing desperation of the autocratic CEO, regardless of whether it benefits the business or harnesses the talent of its employees. So much talent has since left the business. Quality of hiring has been poor and off-brief - evident as most new hires leave mysteriously, shortly after they start. So much money has been wasted on pretentious vanity projects, forced fun and self-aggrandising. Scheming runs deep and from the top down.

A joke in the name of research

Pros

Fancy perks, foreign vacations, lots of client money to blow up on 'field' research, lots of time to pursue made up projects and then find someone to sell that to as research

Cons

Hideously political organisation. When I joined, I was taken to a corner by individual staff members and quickly made aware of what not to say to who, who is to be treated better than whom and how to behave like a 'flamingo'. It's a very delusional organisation that actually thinks what it does is research, and as someone who has done research, actual research for a long time, their methodologies were absolutely ridiculous. They overcharge clients to appear as though they are doing something monumental, but they are completely unequipped to handle even basic research as 90% of the staff are from advertising backgrounds with no academic knowledge or idea of what research looks like. The entire organisation is built on googling things, making powerpoint presentations and fooling companies into buying their research. The amount of unethical work that goes on here is unparalleled, and I have worked at some terrible places but this one really takes the cake. I was asked to 'pad out' presentations to reach a certain number of slides so the client thinks they get their money's worth. The country heads are awful people who create an atmosphere of celebrity around them though they are actually just junkies who throw around a terrible attitude and make people feel afraid of them. The culture is horrible, everyone hates everyone yet pretends to be best friends, people cry because of work stress all the time, working weekends and working until the morning hours is completely standard, people are always backstabbing each other to get promotions and juicy projects and I wouldn't recommend it to my enemy.

Pros

Great projects Excellent benefits - the best I've ever seen (travel and health insurance, pension, language learning budget, free breakfasts, yoga, etc.) Amazing travel

Cons

Really disorganised Quite unfriendly Very "specific" kind of person that does well - if you don't fit into the clique, it's very obvious Long working hours are expected - evenings and weekends are frequent Very unstructured - you don't have a line manager or anyone to turn to Some projects can be much better than others - and aren't always distributed fairy A lot of favouritism between employees Pay isn't great for the hours expected Highly competitive, very gossipy and some bullying
