A Challenge to Love Your Job

Pros

I worked in the Entertainment department for several years. My fellow cast members were enthusiastic and creative. Interacting with guests was always a joy. As long as I was "on stage," it was fun and rewarding on a personal level.

Cons

The Entertainment department has been pared back year after year. People who attended the festival 15 years ago remember streets filled with eccentric characters, musicians and acts. Children got to watch dozens of characters not only be silly but also engage in choreographed stage combat. Today, you can walk through the entire festival and not hear a single musician or spot a character. It's not the performers' faults -- there are fewer of them and the grounds are large. And remember when I said it was always fun to be "on stage?" Going backstage was much less fun. While my fellow cast mates were great, it was a constant reminder that the department as a whole has been overlooked. And that's not even addressing the pay situation (which isn't pretty -- you have to love what you do because the pay is not good).

Not great

Pros

Decent seasonal work Some interesting customers, which can be pleasant It's only on weekends which is great if you're a full time student during the week and just need an extra pay check. Most of the other people working there are very nice.

Cons

Poor management for the most part. Most of the supervisors don't understand how the booths work, but will keep coming up with very asinine and inefficient ways to run the booths and then blame you when it's not working. They'll also become upset if you try to fix it yourself, regardless of the results. It can get incredibly hot. Do not underestimate the sun. At some booths you get 15 minute lunch breaks. Which is either just enough to catch your breath or down a snack assuming your brought one. Do not expect to be able to buy food there in that time, the lines can be bad.

A very bad changing of the guard.

Pros

It can be a fun job, interacting with patrons. There are a good number of laughs to be had and the day sometimes goes by quickly.

Cons

It is hot. There are very long days and management is miserable. Just so you know: contracts CAN be voided by upper management! Just because it is written down and you sign it doesn't mean they have to follow it apparently.
