Pros

One of the most amazing biotech-genomics-CompSci talent pools that exist in the world. Amazing facilities, amazing potential to change everything we know about health and disease. It's in San Diego.

Cons

I was driven to write this because of the obviously planted reviews of June 28th. It is this kind of questionable integrity that made me give my resignation. HLI is not managed like a great business, a great research center, or a great clinical services center... they do not know who they are, except that they have the flash of the name Craig Venter who can convince the impressionable to invest in something they don't understand. The place is run on fear, favoratism, and personal ego stroking of upper management. My last straw was hearing the multiple concerns re data integrity, ethics, and privacy from both the clinical and research sides. It is very sad, as the people they have recruited are amazing, but management stifles the best people from giving their creative and collaborative best while rewarding those that tow the party line. HLI has the potential to change the world under a new CEO and CMO, but as it stands it is a place ripe for the picking of great talent.

Pros

Talented computational scientists as colleagues, very interesting genomic datasets and research problems, nice office space and benefits

Cons

Random and high-rate of firing! Poor retention of talent. Insane rate of hiring and growth (probably more than 50 in six months period) leads to very poor management and highly political environment. Very inept HR. Autocratic management structure.

Pros

Lots of great people and cutting edge technology

Cons

The company is directionless and scattered. The leaders and C-levels of the company are so disconnected from what is actually happening in the various departments and seem to be blissfully ignorant of the swarms of long term employees leaving the company. Nepotism runs rampant ensuring the favored stay employed and in power. People are fired and let go without reason, and departments are in-fighting trying to prove their value to the company. There is a strong heir of elitism that has drawn a clear line between who is valuable, and who is disposable. The few competent leaders are spread thin and a large majority of long time employees are leaving or looking to leave soon.
