Fun culture, poor management

Pros

-- Fun activities like industry happy hours, UX summits, and company-wide trips (Hawaii last year, Iceland this year!) -- Great people

Cons

1. Below median pay. The company pays on extravagances like parties and trips (which are fun) but everyone is getting paid maybe 60% of what their market salaries should be! 2. HUGE turnover. In a 1 month period, we lost 80% of our development team in Palo Alto. If you check LinkedIn, you'll see no developer or designer stays more than a year. Its even worse for sales -- after 6 months, they're all let go. 3. Lack of focus. Why in the world would we pay to produce a music video when you can't even keep your employees?!?!?! 4. Work quality is iffy -- we have a very low rate of return clients and most of our team are junior designers or devs (not withstanding their titles) an the senior people are flown in from Finland to spend a few weeks to oversee critical projects.

Potential to be Great

Pros

* A group of passionate designers who care about the company, their colleagues, clients, and their work - this group unfortunately has to carry the weight of some designers who are just looking to get a paycheck * Most executives care about individuals and are very accessible but stretched thin * Interesting projects, many of which we can’t share. As with most organizations, there are also less exciting projects which can be seen as an opportunity to expand skillset and experience - younger team members may not see the value in getting experience in such projects yet. * In addition to the strong, incredibly smart and dedicated team members who have been at the company for years, there has been a wave of new hires across studios - designers and strategists who are extremely talented, energetic, impressive, experienced, and inspiring * Turnover is actually quite low compared to industry average and tenure is on par - check LinkedIn

Cons

* Lack of true leadership, mentorship, and accountability from *some* executives * Horrible communication from some senior managers and executives - non-existent, passive aggressive, or downright demotivating - for some this may be due to cultural differences (Finnish) and for others perhaps insecurity * Lack of process due to the fact that most of leadership and management teams have little experience in a structured environment - this has been their baby for 20 years, or someone took a chance on them * Capgemini acquisition handled poorly by both organizations. Acquisitions rarely go smoothly, and this acquisition is no different. Capgemini counterparts take the attitude that we should be grateful to them on an individual level and insist their way is the only way.

Pros

Talented mid and sr level colleagues, a reflection of how good the hiring team is Lack of capable leadership and management means that you are free to do whatever you want, which some designers really take advantage of, leaning in to the lazy vibe

Cons

Leadership and management are inexperienced. Lots of jargon and not enough vision. Quality of work, equality among sexes and races, collaboration, skill development, conflict resolution, and doing the work to build and sustain longlasting client relationships are not priorities at Idean. Preferential treatment is very obvious. Personally witnessed 2 highly qualified experienced women apply to work on client projects that were perfect fits for them, only to be turned down by management and the positions given to brand new male hires instead.
