I worked at J-PAL full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

J-PAL is a well known organisation especially in the fields of academia and research. From early on you begin to work with Economists who are at the top of their domains from some of the best universities in the world. Projects at J-PAL are managed like small organisations - it gives you a chance to get great exposure to setting up an organisation, hiring field staff, training and managing the entire field operations.

    Cons

Very often people are sent to remote locations, where they are at the beck and call of the Economists. expectations are not managed well and most of the RA and RMs and project Managers are overworked.

I worked at J-PAL full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

I worked at J-PAL right out of college. The degree of autonomy and the amount of guidance from the organisation (i.e. managers and professors) was extremely balanced. Apart from high quality of research J-PAL exposes you to, there is a vibrant culture of work that lays a solid foundation to work-place practices for the future. That being said, like any other institution /organisation, it is up to an individual to make...

    Cons

Hiring at J-PAL is per project -- experiences vary because of many factors- the stage of the project, PIs, location, to name a few! If the project is slowly moving, it can be extremely frustrating. If the location is very remote, there are other challenges. These factors are really not too much in your control and sometimes may not be to your liking.

I worked at J-PAL full-time for more than a year

      Pros

You learn field management. If the stars align you learn Stata

      Cons

Work is highly dependant on the project. Always on call. Senior management is incompetent. Even though the research deals with people, you aren't treated like you're a human. PIs are treated like gods. Some Managers don't stand up against the PIs even when RMs themselves have complaints. They barely stands up for the RAs.

      Advice to Management

Make things more consistent across projects. Provide more support to RAs and don't just put them in the deep end and expect then to figure everything out.

      I worked at J-PAL full-time

      Pros

-The peers. J-PAL manages to attract very driven, talented, and innovative peers. Most of your learning and growth comes from them as opposed to the Principal Investigators. This is so because Principal Investigators mostly don't spend much time in mentoring or even communicating outside the weekly calls (there are some exceptions of course). - You get a very hands on experience on good data collection for development...

      Cons

-Senior management is woefully inadequate, and ill-equipped to mentor Research Managers, and Senior Research Associates. This has especially worsened over the last couple of years. You will hardly ever see any senior management in any field office. They are cut off from the ground realities. Office politics takes precedence over transparency in hiring, and evaluation process. Towing the line is rewarded. -The structural...

I have been working at J-PAL full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

      1. Top notch data skills after two years of experience 2. You will be positioned to work with a team of field staff and professors. So you get to understand on ground realities and connect them theoretically. 3. Project management skills will be well developed. Especially at such a young age, when the RAs get to cal the shots on the field - you learn a lot about work prioritization, handling partner/stakeholders,...

      Cons

      1. No standardization with respect to payment policies - payment structures, perks and benefits are different amongst the field staff or consultants which is HUGE problem as an organization. 2. Poor leadership among the middle and senior management. There are very few people in the senior management who have a spine and speak up when things are wrong. Else, everyone believes - fall in line or fall out. 3. Zero...
