Pros

black box salary can work to advantage

Cons

even for a law firm, lawyers are miserable; partners would talk about one deal to confirm capacity and then end up staffing you to another

Pros

Looks good on a resume, people there will generally be nice to your face , it is possible to gain some good and transferable experience if you get in with the right group/partner

Cons

Miserable people, salaries are highly uncompetitive compared to other large firms of same standing, no bonuses (and no, the salaries do not make it for that, for the vast majority of associates), rampant pay discrimination against women, inability and no desire to retain and promote female attorneys, old boys club, absolutely terrible review and evaluation process (how is it even legal?), widespread culture that rewards and promotes those who throw junior associates under the bus for their own personal gain. The culture at this firm is psychologically abusive, and for women, it can be highly damaging to your career, as you are given menial work, lower hours, and lower pay compared to your male counterparts (and compared to your female friends at other big name law firms).

Pros

Good name that can open door for other opportunities; exposure to substantive work and early responsibility for associates; global integration; subsidized cafeteria

Cons

Lack of any of positive culture; some very difficult partners (depends on practice group but you will be miserable FAST) - there is a reason for the high attrition rate; firm has very conservative, traditional mentality and can feel behind the times; very little attention to associate development; no associate or women's committees and does not seem committed to women's issues (women's health coverage does not match peer firms); expensive benefits; does not invest in IT or otherwise provide tools facilitate to attorney productivity despite the expectation to be available 24/7; compensation less than peer firms due to no-bonus structure; firm nickel and dimes associates on costs that most peer firms would absorb If you have the option to work here, you probably have other options - take those instead. Hiring is a bait and switch.
