Mismanagement on a great concept

Pros

This is a problem-solving engineer's dream. The work allows you to see new manufacturing environments and experience various manufacturing cultures. The company's central concept of energy management is a great one and is a necessary one. Energy is a commodity and needs to be conserved as well. There is a lot of opportunity to that regard and MPC smartly positions itself to go after that soon-to-be necessity for various clients.

Cons

A great concept with poor management is not the best grounds of success. The traveling consultants are easily the greatest assets of the company. There have been many successful projects and it is due mainly to the consultants. The CEO micromanages everything and uses negative reinforcement to motivate employees. This creates a really low morale on project teams and its hard to be productive as the CEO who has no clue on what's going on the project tries to force tasks that don't have any bearing on the project. These tasks are time wasting and adds additional stress as the team must complete them or be insulted for not trying hard enough. The employees of this company are excellent, intelligent, and great engineers. However, they are all treated like dirt and as expendable resources and there are no true opportunities to move up as the company is just too small. Failed promises. The CEO never delivers on promises. Whether its to the clients or to the employees. The central mantra of any consulting company is to under-promise and over-deliver. For MPC its always over-promise and under-deliver. In conversations with the employee, CEO keeps promising new projects, huge opportunities, the end of lack of projects every single year. And never has those promises come true. Business is stagnant and projects trickle in once every in a while. Simple things like payments and reimbursements are also delayed because of the lack of projects and its hard to work for a company when simple promises are not being fulfilled. Travel is not for everyone. The travel schedule for MPC is too much. There is just not enough rest to be gained from week to week. Its hard to spend quality time with loved ones and the tolls of travel does eventually weigh people down.

Unfortunately this period of time had mid managers that were not capable of achieving the results MPC has successfully gained for over 400 companies. Many excuses and little performance. This of course has been corrected. MPC continues to hire and train very capable individuals who are committed to the reduction of GHG emissions and improving the environment. Critical in this day and age.

Pros

Plenty of experience with multiple levels of management and also with various types of equipment. Travel to various parts of the US and different industries.

Cons

Various significant deal breakers with this company. The first significant issues are consistency and communication. Most projects do not have any preparation or handshake between sales and operations so usually the client even is not prepared for the project. Management is the biggest issue at this company. As mentioned before there are zero reviews of your performance and zero mentorship. Everything you learn will be from your own research. The "subject matter experts" and all levels of upper management have no technical background and at times believe the world does not follow the laws of thermodynamics. If you come into this company, you will see and hear a lot of opportunity for upward mobility, but it is fools gold. The company cannot gain enough traction to grow because of a sub-standard product and is now competing with the big boys. I could write more, but I think I'll wrap it up with a warning and a comment made to me on an outgoing colleague. The warning would be to a potential client of MPC. I would recommend you do your due-diligence on this company before signing any contract. Go beyond the references that they give you. A former colleague on his way out of the company told me this: "I am embarrassed to list them on my resume."

Thank you for bringing up a good point regarding consistency and communication: several months ago we made an organizational commitment to improve these and have since deployed new, highly effective tools and protocols to seize the opportunity as well as improve our company culture on the whole. That said, it's difficult to identify any similarly addressable specifics elsewhere in your review. It is worth noting that in the time since you wrote your review, some changes have taken place in the management team you reference: However, our 'product' has been the same in nature for over 30 years and has brought consistently significant and incremental savings to every client without fail.

Pros

The concept is potentially powerful, but will always be handicapped by a short-sighted, paranoid, and ineffective CEO with zero self awareness.

Cons

The CEO is a dinosaur's dinosaur; his consistent use of verbal abuse and humiliation as a motivator has created a mercenary culture where nobody contributes beyond what is specifically asked for. He trusts no middle management and is convinced that every major corporation is trying to steal his 'secrets' for energy management. Short version: It's a bit like working for Golem from Lord of the Rings. Actually, it's EXACTLY like working for Golem from Lord of the Rings.

MPC has gained over $1 billion dollars in energy reductions for major manufacturers in the last 35 years. It has adapted to the changes in technology and business practices and continues to be the leader in energy management. To accomplish this MPC hires the highest quality applicants. Unfortunately on occasion the applicant cannot deliver the results MPC demands. Those individuals are simply not suited for this environment.
