Massive Favoritism

Pros

The employees who have been on staff for awhile are, for the most part, hard workers. Slacking by librarians is overlooked, along with occasional slacking by lower-paid employees. It is a government workplace, though.

Cons

Management at Admin level is abysmal, with choice openings repeatedly handed to selected favorites. Admin is continually expanding its own ranks, while regular branch employees go without raises for years & years. Positions are held open for specific individuals, job descriptions are rewritten (& given generous salary increases) for specific employees, while long-time staffers looking to advance are passed over. Job descriptions that were rewritten are then rewritten again when the favorited staffer moves up. If you earned your MLS in mid-life, don't even try to get a job here. IF you are lucky enough to land a librarian position, do so with the knowledge that you have absolutely NO opportunity for advancement. Supervisory & management positions ALL go to younger staffers -- regardless of ability, knowledge, or job performance.

Pros

Part time work that is not flexible is crazy. Availing yourself all day to work a 4 hr shift if at all. No benefit and pay is minimal/

Cons

Management is all about favorites-who thy like: no morals or skills to manage consistently and ethically. Turn-over is high and the service to their employees or patrons is horrific. No formal training and development: Depending on who trains you or if the person likes you; it can differ to a point of sabotage making sure of failure. Unfortunately, It's you typical no-ethic, catty and negative places to work. Too many women with their unprofessional high school drama; no place in a work place. A few talented, dedicated individuals get over work while others create and get away with murder all in the name of favoritism..

Pros

Great - talented people. Some really good managers. Good benefits and working conditions.

Cons

Administration is disconnected to what goes on at the individual branches. Personnel matters take way too much time to be dealt with. No way for employees to give feedback about anything, and when there was those issues were never addressed.
