This company's software development methods are outdated. In terms of software development structure, there really isn't any... it basically fits the definition of "cowboy coding" perfectly. As a result, the software they produce is buggy and bloated, not to mention archaic. Their flagship product "My Vision Express" is developed using PowerBuilder, an Integrated Development Environment that's outdated compared to modern products like Visual Studio, Eclipse, or IBM Rational.
Management has little regard for involving software developers in the "planning" process, which usually goes on behind closed doors. Projects are passed on to the developers verbally or through a vague ticket using their support ticketing system. For this reason, projects often drag on for months, as they're scrapped and redone time and time again because of a lack of proper planning and poor communication.
Development is driven by bloating their software, adding layers of features that are disorganized and often counter-intuitive. Development is not user driven, it's driven by a need to do things right now, instead of doing things the right way. As a result, each version of "My Vision Express" has become slower than the last. For example, instead of developing an actual thin client solution for a web hosted platform, they decided to use their desktop application over a Remote Desktop Connection, which is a lazy solution and makes their software even slower for web hosted customers. If there was any decent competition for this company, they would be in trouble. Overall, an average place to work if you're in sales, support, or consulting. But if you're a serious software engineer that cares about your career, this might not be the place for you.
