Not what it used to be...

Pros

The team that was built before the new CEO is an incredible group—engaging, inspiring, and deeply committed to the mission. The company used to be a place filled with empathy, energy, and a strong sense of a positive future.

Cons

I can no longer recommend Normative as a workplace. If you had asked me a year ago, my answer would have been very different. The company once had an incredible, humble, and brilliant CEO who truly embodied the mission—but after being pushed out, leadership was replaced by a more sales-driven approach that treats employees like numbers. This shift has completely changed the company’s once-inspiring culture, and the declining numbers reflect that reality. The new CEO brings an Elon Musk-style leadership—micro-managing, narcissistic, and draining the energy from the team. When new C-level management came in back in 2022, there was a wave of fresh enthusiasm, and everyone was delivering. Since the new CEO took over, morale has steadily declined. Layoffs have become an annual occurrence, creating an unstable and fragile work environment. One of the biggest blows was the dismantling of the effective marketing team, which had consistently met its targets. After this decision, at least four more team members left voluntarily, as the department no longer felt like the powerhouse it once was. Normative used to be a company full of passion, collaboration, and forward momentum. Unfortunately, that spirit has been lost.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback and we wish you the best going forward. We are sorry to hear that you feel Normative has changed for the worse. It can sometimes be the case when someone leaves whilst the company transitions from its start-up stage to its scale-up stage and there is a change in leadership. This being said, we would like to respectfully challenge the view that we are randomly breaking things. Instead, we are collectively building a rigorous framework using data to assess everything we do. Unfortunately, it means that some things that we used to do and were proud of were not having the outcome we thought. While it is not fun to adjust to this new reality, we have no choice but to do it quickly - especially at a time where regulatory and political winds blow in all directions at once and we have to be focused on our twin long missions: building the data layer required to power decarbonisation and, in the process, building the best carbon accounting platform.

Pros

Normative is trying to save the world by solving the climate crisis. It's a very value-driven company and I really liked that there was a strong focus on _reducing_ carbon emissions, not just estimating it.

Cons

The company didn't fit me very well. There were too many role silos for an engineer. For example, engineers were not invited to partake in the decisions/discussions where the product was heading. This led to some unrealistic product features being built. I wasn't particularly happy about the product. It was targeted more towards expert users (which is why I think it wasn't self-signup). I think the fact that the company had so many internal expert users made it impossible for the product to become simple enough for external users to use. Feedback culture was subpar, CTO was rather micromanaging, and all former Spotify managers left one after another due to culture misalignment. The company has a strict dev and ops split (there is an "Operations department"), so if you want a DevOps culture this company is not for you. Tech-wise the company has made some significant improvement to tech debt. That said, I found the company to mostly be a playground for frontenders and _very_ TypeScript-centric which impacted velocity/complexity negatively. The few senior engineers (not talking about title here) that existed were grossly underused and underappreciated. Finally, the engineering org. was moving in the direction of an oligarchy where a select few (mostly, male) were invited to an invite-only room where technical strategy was discussed and decided upon. That decision process was not very inclusive, nor diverse. Oh, and on the topic of inclusivity and diversity - the DEIB group that used to exist was merged into a "work environment group" with a rather different assignment which was a bit sad.

Thank you for contributing to the mission and the feedback described from your perspective. It's, of course, true that not every company and way of working will be a good match. Wish you the best on all future adventures!

Has become a totally different company in the past year

Pros

Some extremely smart and driven people especially in sustainability. A good environmental mission (though there is less focus on that now).

Cons

Don't pay attention to any Glassdoor review from more than 1 year ago. Because Normative has become a totally different company since after then. Every single C level executive is different now than it was one year ago. There have been two rounds of layoffs and everyone is afraid of a third. I have seen really competent people on other teams get laid off because their manager was feeling threatened. (Luckily I have a good manager but it still makes you think) Like many companies Normative has the One Team motto but it is only used to make you do things outside of your job description and to work overtime. Basically you are asked to sacrifice for Normative but Normative does not support you in return. Most people are looking to get out. Normative is not a place to be for the long term.
