Pros

Some great engineers to work alongside, who you can share your misery with.

Cons

If you’re thinking of joining Octopus on the heat pump side – don’t. Nobody is happy, everyone is planning on leaving, and senior management couldn’t care less. Expect 50–60 hour weeks, long drives disguised as “35 minutes” on Kraken, unrealistic 4-day installs, and zero work-life balance. Safety is ignored, surveys are done by unqualified people, processes change daily, and there’s no HR if your manager pushes you into unsafe work. It’s a “just smash it out” culture where everything is the “leads” fault and nothing is ever good enough. I’ll be leaving as soon as I can. Easily the worst job I’ve ever had.

We're really sorry to hear about your experience, and we take concerns like this seriously. We understand how frustrating it must feel to face long hours, unclear processes, and safety concerns. That’s not the kind of environment we want for anyone at Octopus. Our goal is to build a culture where people feel safe, supported, and heard, and if we’re falling short of that, we need to know so we can improve. If you're open to it, we'd really appreciate the opportunity to discuss this in more detail. It’s important to us to learn from experiences like yours, and to make meaningful changes where they’re needed. Please feel free to reach out directly to nour.rasamny@octopus.energy. Thank you again for your honesty, it helps us do better and we really do care!

Pros

Communication, from the very off I had a call on thr Friday before travelling up. That set thr tone for what was to come. Wasn't expecting that, never had that before. Great chance to ask questions for me but also make me feel assured. Last company had me train it up to Liverpool and nothing was ready. Training, the on site and off site was really good, laid back and actually fun. All levels of staff really vibe well. Even now it does feel like a community. Vans, used van but was professionally valeted the day before. Being a tech company picking a van and registering it was few clicks of a button. As is all things really. Just so easy. Great uniform for every weather condition. Tools brand new and easy to get. So overall the onboarding was absolutely flawless. Hotel was decent too. On the job, Plenty of chance to charge vans and do bybox and they'll fit charger in your home if possible I don't ever feel rushed or over worked, plenty of work if want overtime and on call. The scheduling is super efficient, rarely am I venturing too far. A first for me in this industry. So im happier as are my kids seeing more of me. Management are approachable and proactive. The tech is really good, great app for commissioning and taking pics. Great app fkr booking and viewing leave. The customers. They are chill. They always seem to advocate Greg the ceo and the business. In all my previous companies being the face of the business I'd hear evey moan and tale of where it went wrong but octopus customers are actually happy which makes job easier. Tech support is quick as is the comms support, actually I'd say they're the biggest win. Engagement is up there. Regular family dinners on line are fun amd engaging with senior management always part of it and down to earth. Meal allowance and can do the odd school run if it makes work day easier which is great. All stock delivered over night.

Cons

Nearly 6 months I cant speak of any. People say pay is low for industry but by time you tot it all up with meal allowance etc it balances out but also feel like proper job security Sounds like im laying on thick but its true of my experince.

Pros

I have a really great manager

Cons

My time at this company has incredibly frustrating and disappointing. As an existing member of staff, I found out I was being paid less than colleagues in similar roles, and when I raised it, senior management flat-out refused to fix it. Even after going through the formal escalation process, nothing changed. The message I got was loud and clear: my concerns didn’t matter. As an Iranian ethnic minority, the way this situation was handled made me feel completely unsupported, ignored, and disrespected. The pay gap over the past year cost me a significant amount of money, and watching the company brush it off was infuriating. Based on what I personally went through, I absolutely cannot recommend this company—especially to anyone from a minority background who expects fairness or even basic respect. I have been treated badly, and I would urge others to look elsewhere before risking the same experience.

Colleagues are genuinely top class and so kind Good company equipment (Mac) Recruitment is good

Cons

-Senior Management do not listen to feedback metrics (office vibe) -Constant additions to an already overwhelmed department -Little to no training -We have been in a “peak period” for well over 6 months now, with no infrastructure to support us and we have gone from managing pipelines of 40-80 to nearing 200 people. - Poor engagement team, great for events but poor in taking onboard constructive feedback and actioning improvements - Way too many irrelevant meetings - Poor Salary for project management role

Pros

While there were some positive aspects, such as like team collaboration or work environment, can't say that you as a employee in case you need any sort of support, or if it happens that your manager just doesn't like you, nothing to do with your work ethic, will be able to find any sort of support, you will be left at the mercy of this person with no HR to be involved. Forget about employee rights and all those sorts of things.

Cons

The absence of an HR department significantly impacted my overall experience and ultimately affected my well-being. Without HR, essential processes—particularly those related to employee welfare, feedback, and conflict resolution—were poorly managed. Unfortunately, if you're assigned to a difficult or unprofessional manager, there's no formal avenue to raise concerns. In my case, this led to an abrupt and, in my opinion, unjust termination. My manager appeared to instrumentalize the situation for own gain, This was all possible because I had no HR support or higher management involvement to intervene or ensure fairness. My resignation was the result of how poorly the situation was handled, lacking oversight, transparency, and support from those in higher positions. Having a dedicated HR team is crucial for ensuring fair treatment, providing conflict resolution avenues, and maintaining a healthy work environment. I hope the company prioritizes developing HR resources and ensuring senior management is more involved in employee relations to prevent similar situations from escalating.

Thanks for taking to time to leave your review. It's good to see you enjoyed aspects of your time with us despite the specific circumstances of your leaving. Certain topics you have raised are concerning, and I'd like to take this opportunity to address each of them. To your first point, we've spoken a lot as a business on not having an HR department - which I totally understand is not for everyone. However, the absence of a centralised HR team does not mean that we do not prioritise and operate all employee welfare matters, feedback or conflict resolution as an organisation. In fact, it's quite the opposite. We have a distributed function and empower our managers and leaders to handle situations that arise in their team and should that not be effective, employees always have the avenue to escalate their concerns, where they see fit. We are constantly investing in training to better support our managers with these conversations. With respect to the experience of management and having no clear channels to speak to anyone, our priority is not to create a difficult organisational system and our leaders operate very open ways of working. I'm sorry that you feel this didn't play out in practice during your time with us. The leadership tone at Octopus is extremely people centric focussing on creating and sustaining a safe environment for any employee to raise any concerns, including to our SLT. We will consider how best to continue to emphasise the ethos of open leadership to employees. Any dismissals are considered seriously as they have an impact on those that leave and those that stay and such decisions are not taken lightly. I understand you feel your termination was unjust - which is a huge shame - it's certainly difficult for both parties when things don't work out. If you would like the opportunity to run through this in more detail so we can understand your experience more deeply, please do reach out. Wishing you the best of luck with your future endeavours. Pros

Everyone talks about how good the culture is at Octopus. Octopus really care about their people, making sure everyone feels supported and looked after. It's not just talk either; we're big on things like your well-being and helping you grow. Plus, there is a really open, transparent setup where you can actually chat with senior management (even the CEO!) if you have ideas or worries. It's a place where you can genuinely be yourself and have a bit of fun while you're at it.

Cons

As a rapidly expanding company, things can change quickly. New processes, new teams, new challenges. This can be exciting, but it can also lead to a bit of disorganisation or "growing pains" at times.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience on Glassdoor. We really value honest feedback like yours as it helps us see where we need to do better. We’re sorry to hear that your role has felt overwhelming at times and that you haven’t always felt supported. We know the Area Manager role can be demanding, and we’re actively working on ways to improve processes, balance workloads, and give clearer direction so our managers can focus on what they do best. When it comes to introducing new work streams, our aim is to provide thorough training and ensure these changes are rolled out in a way that supports our teams, rather than adding unnecessary pressure. We’re also reviewing things like training, pay structures and operational support so we can build a better day-to-day experience for everyone. We want changes to have a positive impact within our teams! We will take your feedback away to work on and we’d love to talk more if you’re open to it. Please feel free to reach out to me directly at max.carter@octopusenergy.services. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and for the work you do every day.

Pros

Up skilling has been good.

Cons

Treated like a number. Senior management on the engineering side don't care about the staff. Fundamental changes to work expectations are made without any warning or consultation. Pay is below average for the industry. Work volume has increased by over 25% recently without warning. Promotion isn't possible after new management from outside the business brought in their old colleagues.

Pros

I genuinely feel lucky to be part of such a fantastic company. From day one, I could see that Octopus is committed to not only changing the energy industry but also making sure its people feel valued, supported, and empowered. Some of the perks are: Unlimited Annual Leave Friendly Senior Management Strong Growth Opportunities Steep Learning Curve Flexible Hybrid Working

Cons

As with any fast-growing company, there are times when things get busy and you have to put in a little extra. But the flexibility and support here make it manageable, and you can tell they care about keeping workloads reasonable. Another point is compensations are not as competitive as other players in the market.
