Pros

Despite the cons, there are a few pros to working at Optimity - The biggest shame about Optimity is that during my time there, I met some incredibly talented, dedicated people that were willing and loyal enough to put in the hard work to make much needed changes within the company and make it a fantastic place to work. Unfortunately they never get far, due to the issues mentioned in cons. - It can be used as a stepping stone for inexperienced individuals looking to progress and gain experience in the industry, due to the chaotic working environment employees are forced to learn fast. - Optimity’s main “Wibre” product is a solid and interesting idea, were it implemented/maintained competently.

Cons

- Highly stressful environment due to poorly run day to day systems (seen in all departments). - Many heads of departments would rather blame another department than work together to resolve the issue. - Upper management completely incapable of listening to their staff when suggestions made that could change the company for the better, many that try are shunned afterwards for their efforts. - Severe issues with budgetary allowances, stock is often missing or passed around and engineers are left without sufficient equipment to perform tasks. - Promises made to customers which are often impossible to honour for other departments, resulting in stress/arguments within the company, and with customers. - Promises of pay rises/reviews are often verbally made, but never followed up on, staff members are normally only taken seriously if they hand in their notice. - Incredibly high staff turnover due to issues faced, in as little as six months most departments are unrecognisable. - Narcissistic Managing Director would rather surround themselves with “yes men” then listen to employees and deal with the issues (it can’t be a coincidence that the only positive reviews found on this site are submitted by current employees).

Fun at first but ultimately frustrating.

Pros

A youthful and ambitious environment with an incredibly high rate of staff churn allows anyone with a little patience and the right attitude to progress further than they might ordinarily. You’ll never find a place like it!

Cons

Chaos and confusion directed by a well-meaning but ill-equipped and uneducated senior management team. A fundamental misunderstanding of the technology and its application results in a Heath Robinson approach to design and build, of which the company can’t break free. Ultimately a very frustrating place to work, shadowed by a constant and unshakeable sense that everything could fall apart at any moment. I personally found it a depressing shame to have seen so many talented, skilled and ambitious individuals come and then very quickly leave.

Pros

Benefits are quite good, decent pay, good location, some good people there.

Cons

The interview process paints quite a different picture of the business compared to the reality of how it’s run. The leadership team is weak and lacks direction, cohesion, vision or strategy, giving rise to a business with tunnel vision, whose significant focus is on whether targets will be met or not at month end. Any strategic discussions seemed to go around in circles, causing confusion and bad decision making. Difficult to determine who actually runs the business, the VC company or the leadership team. It’s operationally focussed, meaning the sole focus of management is on targets and KPI’s. Depending on the function, these can be unrealistic, unachievable and out of sync with the rest of the business. There is significant staff churn and good people leave regularly. It wasn’t unusual for someone to leave every two weeks, and they often weren’t replaced, meaning teams were put under further strain. There is an underlying culture of fear and blame, possibly because staff are seen to be so dispensable. The business controls its spending tightly. There are pro’s and con’s of this. The con’s generally affecting the working conditions and environment.

Thank you for your comments. Optimity is a young, fast-paced and rapidly growing company. These truly positive dynamics often create an environment where many love to excel, thrive and feel rewarded for the challenges they overcome. For others, it can be uncomfortable and it is okay to recognise that. I am genuinely sorry that you didn’t find an avenue for satisfying and rewarding work. Leeland Pavey CEO
