Pros

The vast majority of employees are smart, talented, and kind people. Pay is competitive and benefits are in line with the area. The company handled the COVID situation well overall. You’ll work on cool stuff.

Cons

Congratulations! Now that you’ve accepted a job at Pacific Cycle, your career has turned into the mosquito in Jurassic Park: frozen in amber for an eternity. You can pick up new responsibilities and find new ways to grow personally, but you will not be rewarded or compensated for it. Your title will not change, even if it no longer reflects the work you’re doing. Career paths are nonexistent. Promises are not kept. Yearly raises do not meet the cost of living threshold. New leadership took over Pacific Cycle in 2019 and morale has plummeted as the culture has curdled into a toxic fratboy bro-fest. This issue has been brought up numerous times in large public meetings and has been either ignored or dismissed. There is also a serious lack of diversity; senior leadership sent emails about this in summer 2020 (you know why), did nothing else, then claimed in 2021 that “we just don’t have capacity to deal with that right now.” Well, they had capacity to plan a full remodel of the office, though. You tell me which is more important. Communication between members of the Senior Leadership Team appears to be working well. Communication from the SLT to everyone else in the organization is abysmal. If you want leaders who are transparent, open, and honest, this isn’t the place for you. There is no bonus program for the majority of employees, even in years when the company is extremely successful. Trust me: you can do better.

Great brands, poor management.

Pros

Iconic brands like Schwinn & Mongoose provide lots of opportunity to make great products. Relaxed and fun work atmosphere. Always busy - there is plenty of work to be done. Passionate and knowledgeable employees. Not an awful place to work, the company occasionally listens to employee input and makes an effort to improve. The CEO of Dorel Rec. & Leisure (Pacific Cycle's parent company) recently resigned, the future suddenly looks a bit brighter.

Cons

The company is a sales-driven opportunistic fast follower in the industry at the expense of the integrity of the brands. Will do anything to make a sale, but products being sold seem to be an afterthought. Product quality is poor as a result of utilizing cheap vendors and making low cost an absolute priority. Management in general is lacking. Poor planning, organization, direction, communication and bad or non-existent operational procedures cause a chaotic and inefficient workplace. Tons of projects are started and then scrapped without much thought, your work has little value. The same mistakes are repeated, there isn't an indication of continuous improvement. Seriously understaffed and oblivious to the resources, time and money needed to reach the company's goals. Managers and directors are hired and all the time and departments are restructured - but there are never enough people to actually complete the tasks that management is asking for. Promotions or raises are rare, and there is little opportunity for advancement within.
