Pros

A few genuinely clever people who will always help if they can Some innovative products

Cons

Definitely not the place it used to be. The culture has become toxic and driven by fear and bullying from certain cliques. The senior management are the problem. The majority of issues stem from the HR department which tells you everything you need to know about why these issues are present. How can you approach them when they are a major part of the problem? The HR department appear to think they are untouchable. The other reviews are correct in pointing out they ask people to leave positive reviews to try and counter the negative real ones. Just look at the number of reviews left in April/May 2020 which is when people were asked to leave a positive review. If the same people are still in place, you will be subjected to bullying and intimidation. The lack of professionalism around the HR department is astounding. You only have to look at the recruitment policy/turnover for the last year or 2 to see how far out of their depth they are. In my opinion people occupy senior positions for which they are neither qualified or experienced, but seem to have unquestionable influence. There is no way of raising these issues outside of these individuals, so is unlikely to change. If I knew this before, I would never have joined.

Pros

Used to be a great company, management cared about you and your family, you wanted to work for them you felt inspired to do well and do more every day.

Cons

New management doesn't lead only micromanage, toxic environment, one rule for one and not the other, not inspired, my way or highway, this is not leadership to only care about the number they talk the talk when it comes to culture but that's as far as it goes, its dog eat dog, people are afraid to speak out and certain people lord it up and they love the power. 5 toxic people at least!

Pros

Great charming people that you will love

Cons

Extremely frustrating work environment. You are expected to do the work assigned to you and nothing more. Fall in line or get out was the experience I had while working for Phocas. It was all too common to have to constantly redo large chunks of work every several months because of technical debt which only grows. Development leadership showed a pattern of disinterest in best practices and collaborative work. Instead preferring to impulsively switch between frameworks with no discussion from the stake holders. On multiple occasions, the head of development would produce a multi-thousand line PR, riddled with bugs and hacks, and expect the team to approve it. There was absolutely no room for discussion or feedback. To make matters worse, these large PRs would consistently introduce catastrophic problems which would inevitably result in the team repeating the process again. You see the problems, you see the limitations, but you have no voice. The mess of code would be merged and then the development lead would step away to another project and leave you to pick up the pieces they just dumped all over the floor. Until things got bad enough again and the process was repeated. Attempts by my team to take ownership over the product and break this cycle were met with strong pushback from non technical management. Management has put all of its chips into the stock of a single stretched thin developer. There is no room for dissent. Do the work or get out. Because of this philosophy the most senior developers on my team resigned. Burnout, anxiety, and self doubt were common themes among my teammates. My team tripled in size with absolutely no plan for how to onboard everyone and no strong development road map. If you believe code can and should be beautiful - Phocas is not for you. The approach to code at Phocas is "make it work as fast as possible." Even when time is not of the essence - make it work as fast as possible. Tech debt is irrelevant. You will not be exposed to industry best practices. Also, if you are considering employment at Phocas you should know there is a large initiative within the company to be recognized as one of the best places to work. I think this has driven employees to fill Glassdoor with generic 5 star ratings. So take some of the more corporate sounding reviews with a grain of salt. Finally, I found the compensation extremely uncompetitive. Teammates who I spoke about compensation with felt the same. Phocas is not interested in investing in its employees - only growth in order to get more money from investors.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. While it's disappointing to hear this was your experience, we welcome and appreciate all feedback. Your team faced a number of complex technical challenges over the past year and there were some strongly-held differences of opinion. Disagreements on technical direction are inevitable and while our preference is to talk things through, leadership sometimes has to make pragmatic decisions that aren't popular with everyone. We're conscious communications around the decision making process were inconsistent and we were of course disappointed two developers subsequently chose to resign, but thus far we believe we are headed in the right direction. We totally agree your team grew too quickly and that brought challenges - one of the difficulties with a successful, rapidly growing company. We expanded our development team rapidly over the past year and we've recently hired several additional development managers to ensure we can maintain smaller teams and everyone feels supported. Salaries have to be competitive to attract and retain great people and we also offer a range of additional benefits and a stock option plan. We are absolutely committed to best practice and investing in our people: every engineer devotes a full day every two weeks to professional development. We offer internal and external professional development opportunities and educational reimbursement, and our new Head of Learning and Development is expanding the personal growth resources available to our employees. We are also strongly committed to providing a positive, collaborative culture and working environment for our employees - but employees are neither incentivised nor pressured to leave reviews on Glassdoor. Ultimately everyone's experience is different - especially when things are changing rapidly - and we are grateful you've shared yours and given us the opportunity to learn from it. Best wishes in your new role.
