Small company facing some challenges

Pros

Small team of friendly, hard working people. Flexible schedule and tons of autonomy in your role. Great for someone who thrives working independently and who doesn't need or want a lot of oversight. You get to learn about some pretty cool start-ups. Good for someone with sales experience who is looking to break into recruitment, but who doesn't mind teaching themselves and taking more responsibility for their own training and development. Comp/benefits are actually quite fair considering this is a start-up.

Cons

Little to no performance management, which isn't surprising in the start-up world but can be frustrating since most new hires don't have a lot of recruitment experience to begin with. This could also cause issues down the road if management wants to terminate an employee for poor performance but has no documentation to back them up. The workload fluctuates wildly. I get it, start-up culture, but when things are too busy it can burn you out really quickly and you're expected to reach out for help yourself. Job security is low. There's a temporary layoff clause in the employment contract, which again isn't surprising considering the nature of the business but something potential employees should be aware of if they're looking for/need a secure paycheque. Be aware there's been high turnover, which is a symptom that something internally isn't working.

Pros

We're a small but ambitious recruiting firm in Ottawa, Canada, with a mission to make our client companies better at attracting talent. It's new, it's different, and we are very excited about where we are going. If you share that kind of excitement, then this is the place to be!

Cons

We're unconventional and we are constantly changing. If that scares you, or if you are the type of person that doesn't embrace change and constant testing of new ideas, then this place may frustrate you. Also, we aren't entirely "coin-operated", so you have to be driven by a common purpose to help companies - sounds fine, but sometimes we give up short term dollars to do the right thing.

Unorganized Startup

Pros

Because it’s a small team, there was a lot of autonomy, which was nice. Some of the team members were very supportive at the beginning of working there and willing to jump in and help when you had too much on your plate.

Cons

Probably one of the most unorganized teams I’ve ever worked on. There were no sales processes in place and leadership didn’t really make any effort to establish anything. Because of this, they had a very hard time landing clients and keeping them. For a company that said they were always transparent with the team and that they were “like family”, it came as a shock when majority of the company was laid off. Following the lay offs, HR made multiple mistakes on the exit paperwork which caused approximately 3 months of back and forth with P+E and Service Canada. Overall, P+E could’ve done SO much better. I understand it’s tough times right now and layoffs happen, but the whole process has been dealt with horribly.
