Toxic environment because of horrible leadership

Pros

The majority of the people who work(ed) there are excellent colleagues: smart, helpful, hard-working, motivated The product and service are exciting and present lots of interesting technical challenges

Cons

The CEO is incredibly overbearing and doesn't let employees do their jobs. He uses manipulation and childish games to control situations to his advantage. He has arbitrarily specific standards that halt progress on the product front. He fired five employees for absolutely no reason, and four others quit on their own accord. The team has been left in shambles.

Appreciate you taking the time to provide these important points! It’s our goal that the hard-working and motivated colleagues you encountered feel enabled to do their best work. We are glad you found that Q is on an interesting and exciting path, and enjoy how the nature of that work makes for a unique mix of employee backgrounds and skillsets. Strategic decisions about reprioritization are never easy, and making changes that negatively impact our people is something we take very seriously. As a mission driven company with a hard problem to solve, we understand this is complicated and respect each individual’s right to disagree. We’re sorry you had this experience, and wish you the best. -HR

Pros

- intelligent staff and co-workers who are mission driven - well designed product

Cons

- CEO regularly threatens to (and has) fired people over disagreeing with him - CEO has fired people with no history of feedback and without their direct manager's involvement, leading to an inability to produce and maintain a secure team - CEO regularly reflects and portrays personal failings as staff failures - CEO is unable to follow deadlines set by the team, frequently changing product requirements last minute and subsequently blaming team for missing deadline

Thanks for your feedback. We’re glad to hear you found the team and its goals to be outstanding (we agree!). Q Bio works very hard to hire excellent, capable individuals and remain open to conversation about challenges we encounter as a company with a big mission. We have worked to identify ways that progress tracking toward each milestone is more fully accessible to every team member, and we engage in more frequent roadmap reviews so that our people feel confident and clear about both our short and long-term goals. Our all-hands regularly close with an open Q&A about company priorities and overview updates, and we truly embrace those times we can dig in together, and figure out where more clarity and support are needed. Nothing is harder than parting ways with a team member, particularly in the early stages where the culture of a company is the sum of its cast of talented characters. In the rare case where company policy has been violated, we feel it is fair to the rest of the team to respond with swift and sincere decision making. Fortunately, it’s very rare that this happens, and we are proud that our inspiring and accomplished multi-disciplinary team has continued to shine. - HR

Pros

Fun and challenging technical problems.

Cons

- No clear direction or business goals behind the work - Poor communication company-wide - No emphasis on consistent, clear, robust planning. Goals change frequently due to inability to listen and think carefully. - Disagreements are resolved via appeal to authority, rather than derived by argument based on the product requirements. - Little empathy, honesty, or decency. Toxic behavior is not punished, and good behavior is not rewarded.

We are trying to solve big problems that don't always have clear solutions, so we try and get our team excited to take on broad goals and break them down into parts. It can be difficult to clarify when priorities need to shift, which is to be expected in our space, and though we are always trying to improve, the pandemic has created new challenges in this regard. Though we do go through them at least monthly at our all hands and they are posted on the internal wiki, we hear you that we can do more to be sure everyone at the company feels good about their particular part of our work and can get clarification when needed. Thanks for the feedback!
