Pros

The people and culture at RealSelf are truly exceptional and a sincere motivation to perform at your highest level every day. I used to work for an organization that advocated "bringing your whole self to work," but at RealSelf that is more than just lip service, it is put into practice. My colleagues here are a diverse group of some of the brightest and most creative people I have had the privilege to work with and I am inspired daily by their work ethic and commitment to embodying the company's mission and operating principles. I am so happy I made the leap and invested in a future with RealSelf. I am confident about my prospects for growth and development at the company and I believe that their future is both assured and bright.

Cons

The remote environment means less opportunity for in-person collaboration with colleagues, but that is offset by its many perks.

Pros

High company aspirations, solid brand principles, and great meditation room

Cons

The company aims for one thing, but act in almost the opposite way Aim: They invest in their people Action: The company recently let go of several key staff over the last few months, without ever telling the company why. One day they are there, next, who knows. A few weeks back, a primary stakeholder in a major program was just gone. This left us with nobody to actual do the work and set back our project by months. Aim: To be the go to destination for the aesthetic customers Action: On my team, the leadership punted several key large scale tech investments that are essential to properly serving customers and growing the company. This frustrates staff, leads to a bad customer experience, and sets us behind competitors. Aim: Transparency between leaders and teams Action: We often hear about hyped up big investments in key groups or initiatives that fail to get off the ground - most never to be heard of again. This only baits gossip, distrust and concern among employees.

Your comments underscore the need for improved communication within and among teams as I don’t want any employee to ever feel in the dark or confused about directions or decisions. We are in an important period of transition and change, and on the verge of exciting new investments in our brand and marketing. As a 12-year-old “start up” we constantly need to evaluate what we do, which means making tough decisions to revamp or abandon some things to best serve the needs of our consumers and customers over the next decade. I absolutely believe transparency and living our brand ideals are essential to our future success and welcome further input on how we can improve in these areas. You have my commitment to work with senior leadership to improve communication throughout the company. If you are open to sharing your observations directly with me, please shoot me a slack. --Tom

Pros

Opportunities to work with a variety of technologies. Coworkers were pretty cool for the most part. Snacks & great benefits. You can get away with putting minimal effort into your work. Company-wide, the office has great vibes and people are lovely to work with. Many are unhappy, but they are almost always courteous and kind.

Cons

Engineering management is not invested in the growth of their engineers. There is zero vision for the future of the codebase and engineers are encouraged to take shortcuts, write cruft, and never revisit it. If you take any pride in your craft as an engineer, stay away. High performers are belittled and not given the tools to deliver at a high bar. In the past few months many of the best engineers have quit.
