I have been working at RedViking full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Contrary to another review I read here, I have never witnessed anyone get yelled at. My feeling is quite the opposite, rather than laying blame or pointing fingers, the attitude is generally, "okay, what do we need to do to move forward from this?" Mistakes are acceptable, and so is vacation time. also, I feel it's a benefit that the executive management are all former engineers. They have instituted policies to help alleviate some of the not so fun parts of being en engineer (travel, workload management). I have worked at a few different places. I feel this is a place where everyone actually does behave as a team. I always feel I have support of my managers. I am never left on an island. We always generally try to go the same direction, even when we disagree. Yes, people here make mistakes, even executive management. But everyone is trying hard to make this a great place to work. Decisions are made with the best interests of the employees and customers in mind.

    Cons

Sometimes the communication falls short. Either people don't all receive the message, sometimes the message is a little unclear or misleading. sometimes the priorities aren't clear. I feel this is common in many places though. It's a growing company, and the transition to a small company to medium/large size company is uncomfortable and hard. Change is hard on it's own, but this type of change is really challenging.

I worked at RedViking full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The work is very unique and interesting, and a lot of people are trying their best.

    Cons

Poor management. They don't have a vision for how the company should be structured, and even if they did they don't have the expertise to know how to execute it. They end up restructuring groups every few months to the point where nobody knows what they're doing. PTO policy is antiquated, and recent changes made it worse. Workload is usually so high you're afraid to take time off, since you'll get yelled at for missing deadlines (which are always tight and require extra effort to meet). Pay is very low compared to other places, meanwhile their expectations are sky high. They have a very high opinion of themselves, so they seem to have the mentality that it's a privilege to work there and you should be thankful. They try to push the narrative that it's worse elsewhere, yet somehow talent keeps leaving and before long the people who left have poached others. The grass is always greener, but there are very few people who have regretted leaving. Some do come back, but they're never the ones you want back. There are more than a few toxic personalities floating around. Some of them are pretty high up, so they're not going anywhere any time soon. On a similar note, the company culture values technical competence over all else. Unfortunately this means that you get yelled at for not knowing everything. I've never been on the wrong side of this, but I've seen what happens to people who are. There's no coaching, just yelling, and the result is that many people are afraid to admit they don't know something so they just plow ahead doing things wrong and hope that it works before they get caught. There's a TON of nepotism. You're afraid to criticize co-workers (even if it's constructive) because you never know whose toes you're stepping on. These individuals are often in positions that they're grossly under-qualified for, yet they remain there and they become a major barrier to progress/improvement simply because they don't want to change. Occasionally these nepotistic poor performers are shuffled aside to low-impact positions, but more often they are promoted out of harm's way.

I have been working at RedViking full-time for more than a year

    Pros

This is the only I placed I have worked at that truly has a team mentality. I never feel like I am out on an island with no support. There is always someone here to help, teach, and assist. The leadership of the company is open to listening and adjusting. For people in the company that need to travel, adjustments have been made in the last several months to make travelling a little less painful with bonuses and comp days. The entire leadership has done the job of literally everyone else in the company at some point, and understand the struggles we have. They allow employees to look at other opportunities within the company. If you aren't happy with your position, or just want to try something new, they give you the opportunity. I have worked in large companies where they say you can move within the company, but at RedViking, you can actually move! there are many fringe benefits, too. The healthy challenges are fun, and work towards a healthy company. They have a Cafe' that is stocked by Traverse City Pie Company. The prices are very reasonable and it's great to be able to get a snack or a lunch. The best part is every project is unique and new. RedViking prides itself on taking business that no one has done before. So it's almost like we are inventing something new everyday.

    Cons

RedViking is growing and expanding. With that comes some growing pains. Some of the practices just aren't conducive to a larger growing company. However, these issues are recognized and being addressed. It can sometimes be a little hard to grow, but leadership is doing their best to shield the rank & file form feeling any of the burden.
