Manipulative Leadership

Pros

Coworkers are genuine and kind

Cons

There are many downsides of working at RSI. From the lack of any company structure whatsoever, to the manipulative leadership hired that is incapable of actually providing any type of mentorship to their employees. They attempt to sell you on an “unlimited” PTO plan when you start. However, you are never actually permitted to take any time off. And it you do, you will be asked the specific reason you are taking time off which is extremely unprofessional. Additionally, the holidays you get off are up to management’s discretion. You get off whatever they say and normally find out the day before the holiday occurs. All of this is excused by leadership because “we are so busy” and “growing so fast.” Well if you want to be a successful growing company, you have to treat your people fairly and respect their time. I spent countless nights working until midnight and if I ever drew the line and didn’t show up for weekend/night work, I would be scolded/punished and made to feel guilty for “letting my team down.” I could go on about how this company fails it’s team members but they never showed any signs they would change so I’d think twice before joining this organization.

Bad experience

Pros

Some people (individual contributors) are very nice and knowledgeable.

Cons

Middle management is clueless. They micromanage and create an environment where providing suggestions and questioning is unwelcome. They second guess decisions taken at the team's level, making everyone feel like stepping on eggshells. Some of the best managers have been let go about 2 weeks ago after receiving stellar mid-year performance reviews and nobody knows why. And then their manager went on to say that they got feedback on things they needed to improve and they couldn't get to the expected level. I know it is a straight-up lie. I'm not surprised (continue reading). They hire for remote positions but then make an absurd pressure to go to an office in Toronto (and the office is terrible). The benefits are really bad. The health plan is capped at very low maximum costs per service, so you pay for most of the things. Their RRSP matching offer was initially obscene - it was clearly built so they would spend the minimum. That's their MO: pretending to hear employees. The worst is that they can't be trusted. They make promises around promotions and raises and then break their promises. They say they have this motto of "do what makes sense and question what doesn't", but if you follow it on anything that is not strictly technical, you will be seen as hostile. I'm just about 1 year with them, but I'm already looking for a job where good people are valued and where giving your word means something.

toxic environment

Pros

office location, snacks in the office

Cons

Toxic environment and bad relationships between teams and inside teams. Cult of non-invented here, as result own written frameworks and solutions based on old tech stack. In addition you should be ready to listen / participate in political or religious talks on meetings. Also weird HR process, for example couple of good DEVS were skipped on last step by team because they said that they do not drink more that one glass of wine or two.
