Pros

I was really drawn to the mission, to fight climate change by culturing meat instead of using animals for meat. The work was interesting

Cons

This company is completely mismanaged. The CTO Kasia Gora has no idea what she's doing, she doesn't understand the science, and shes totally toxic. She drives talented people out of the company. Shes a bully and humiliates people. I started working for Artemys with such high hopes about the future but the company culture is SO bad. The CEO Josh doesn't seem like he wants to fix anything and doesn't understand that kasia doesn't understand the science. AND Josh and Kasia ripped us off on our salaries and equity. They only care about themselves... I wouldn't advise anyone to work here.

We appreciate your regard for our mission; we too are excited about the huge impact we can have on climate change by revolutionizing how meat is made, and the interesting and challenging work to do in order to achieve it. How we make that happen is just as important to us. At Artemys Foods, culture is a major part of how we are successful, and it’s something we spend a lot of time working on. We’re committed to having high internal visibility (e.g. sharing board packs with everyone in the company), high autonomy (e.g. everyone involved in developing their own OKRs), and a culture of open feedback at all levels. Although we are saddened to hear you feel you had a negative experience, we stand behind our work to create a culture of context, autonomy and open feedback across all levels of our organization. In addition, we have always been committed to industry-wide benchmarking, reviewed twice a year, to ensure that our equity and compensation packages are above-average for similar size companies in the Bay Area. This benchmarking is also done in alignment with our career ladder, which is shared company-wide.

Artemys talks a good game. As a cutting edge cultured meat company, they’re doing incredible science and the management vision is to have a diverse and open environment full of opportunity. However, after working here, I found the environment and management very challenging. Diversity: At the forefront of their culture, Artemys claims that DEI is of the utmost importance. However, in their execution, it seems diversity goes only as far as skin color and country of origin. Beyond that, they seem to laud advanced degrees over experience and enforce DEI training on the staff while the upper management continues to hold their biases in hiring and organizational practices. In addition, they tout a continuous career ladder that encourages growth, but it is simply an old formula with no innovation around job descriptions beyond those defined by degree level. Their policies appeal to the woke but in practice they read like business as usual with a dash of tokenism. Openness and transparency: While the management claims they are open and transparent, in practice they seem vindictive and lack self reflection. Artemys has a bit of a retention problem. Rather than looking inward and evaluating why these issues arise, the management seems to blame the other party and continue with the status quo. Any feedback given seems to warrant changes in attitude from management as not toeing the company line. Team: Though Artemys wants to build a team (which, to the credit of the team itself, is filled with talented people), they fail to nurture that team. Performance reviews are overemphasized, yet not everyone will get promoted every year and favoritism is rampant, leading to low morale. Instead of enabling team members to fulfill their potential, it seems like the objective is preserving the hierarchy. In addition, when team members understandably become frustrated and relay their concerns, it seems once again that despite claims of openness and transparency, management does not appear interested in addressing these issues. I firmly believe that a startup has the flexibility to make its own rules and I am disappointed that Artemys is replicating old systems which don’t support minorities. The one shining light in all this is the science that is being done here. It is an interesting challenge that could one day have an impact on the world.

Pros

-Highly collaborative -Positive/Open feedback culture -Strong attention to scientific process -Creative work environment, novel methods development -Great co-works -Highly diverse with balanced representation at all levels

Cons

-A fast-paced work environment isn't for everyone. Though our success has lead to rapid company growth along with opportunities to take on new responsibilities, it can also push people out of their comfort zone
