Pros

Meet important authors. Work closely within the industry. You’ll make great friends. An excellent foot in the door and resume builder.

Cons

As an employee that really cared about the company and their work, I have to say that this company does not, really, care about the mental stress of their own employees. The attitude is take on a goliath amount of work, and if you express anything but enthusiasm, your credibility is at stake. To say that former employees simply “couldn’t handle the work” is reductive, insulting, and ultimately lacking responsibility for their own high turnover. While I do believe that management is trying to make positive progress, there is a pervasive stubbornness about admitting biases (gender, race, etc.), and feedback from the team, like, feeling under-staffed or under appreciated. Furthermore, management has a lack of sensitivity or class when communicating with their team. For example, turning down people for promotions (sometimes when they didn’t even apply), is often blunt with the back-handed attitude of “you’re perfect where you are,” or even that promoting you would hurt the company. The job seems more like an emotionally abusive boyfriend that beats you down then makes grand gestures to make it up to you.

Pros

Amazing co-workers, access to scripts, free and discounted tickets to shows, nice office, and great benefits (when they actually give them to you after a 3 month "trial" period, or longer.). You'll make friends for life and meet like minded people. You also get to interact with agents, authors and other industry people. Good intro into the NYC theatre scene.

Cons

Low salaries, hardly ever any raises, no respect, no room for advancement, some members of upper management are a joke and the ones that aren't unfortunately don't really have any say. When the CEO of the company lets anyone and everyone know that he "hates theatre," there is a major problem. Bottom line: There is no where to move up, and they want it that way. Most positions at this company are looked at as "entry" level positions. Upper management, in particularly the CEO, want you out of there as soon as possible; that is why the salaries are some of the lowest in the industry and raises rarely happen. They just don't want to invest in their current employees because they expect you to be gone in a couple years. Employees that have been there less than a year will be "promoted" over employees that have been there for years. It is bad for everyone but even worse if you are a woman. Being an "ambitious" woman here can be looked at as a negative attribute and your accomplishments will be diminished. You will also be treated like a child, even though the average age of most of the staff is probably 30s.

Pros

-You're working in the "industry". -You get free plays...if the company happens to acquire any titles that year, which has been on a steady decline.

Cons

-You have to have the "looks" to move up. -Senior Management doesn't care one bit about you. You're just a minion helping to make their hefty salaries while you're not even making a dime to their dozen. -I take back my previous statement...senior management does care about you if you're a decent looking female...and not in a good way. -New hires often come in making more money than employees that have more experience and have already been working there longer.
