Once a great company, mid level management driving it into the ground.

      30 Aug 2021 - Maintenance Technician
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Good pay, decent 401k, Bonuses, clean environment for food industry work. Good pay and lots of hours available if thats what you are looking for. Top level leadership are genuinely good people with honestly good intentions.

      Cons

Large disconnect between levels of leadership. Low and mid level management wants to be noticed when things are going well but are quick to take down anyone that will make them look bad, lots of issues are swept under the rug. Skills and abilities where once considered a virtue, but college degrees carry more weight even with zero functional knowledge or experience. Lower management and leadership positions are encouraged to distance themselves from production level employees by mid Management, managers do not stand by or support their subordinates. Production employees don't feel they have a voice. Supervisory staff tend to block communication with higher levels, good or bad. Large inconsistencies between facilities in both policy and quality control. Retirement and health options are geared towards the older generation, not many good options for the younger class. Out of date practices and technology and not receptive to suggestions or improvements.

      Marketing at Sargento

      23 Mar 2022 - Marketing
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Strong leadership and classic marketing training potential. Ability to work on harvest, growth, maintain, and nurture products with significant marketing budgets. Ability to develop cross-functional skills. Strong strategic planning process and discipline. Ability to develop best-in-class marketing and leadership skills. Strong benefits.

      Cons

Poor progression speed. Overly analytical/low risk tolerance. Low empowerment. Poor sustainability. Inauthentic brand; doesn’t make cheese and sells processed cheese. Strong bias towards on-site work requires living in small/rural towns or face a long commute.

      Pros

Great place to work if live in the area of the company. Great benefits.

      Cons

Executive team oriented - lower management excluded from decision-making. Not a company for innovated-minded people. No career path available for lower management employees. Many projects are under-resourced (of team members).

      Great Experience

      Pros

I’ve enjoyed my time at Sargento. Great opportunities to grow and advance. I’ve also learned so much. If you genuinely put in the work (not just feel you’re entitled to advancement) at most of the plants and do a great job you WILL be rewarded for your hard work. Great tuition reimbursement program, benefits are good. Company incentives around the holidays are nice and appreciated. I have a long list of opportunities below, but I feel like they could change soon and see myself with Sargento for a long time. Also, with every company there are good and bad things. The good definitely outweighs the bad for me.

      Cons

A lot of Production employees get top pay around the community and work in great conditions for a manufacturing environment but are very rude and unappreciative. Makes decent Leadership not want to stay around. Tenured managers sitting in the same spot for a long time makes it hard for positions to become open. Also hinders change management throughout the department if they’re resistant to change. Some plants have the good ole boy club or you need to know a lot about sports to fit in. Just have to figure out which plant(s) to not spend time on trying to apply.
