I recently interviewed at Smart Start Academy, for a salaried position advertised at a child care facility. Here's a breakdown of my experience:
Pre-Interview:
Inconvenient Location: The interview was scheduled in Hoboken, NJ, on a day with scorching 95-degree temperatures. This location is likely inconvenient for many applicants who rely on public transportation.
Unnecessary Application Step: Upon arrival, I was asked to fill out an additional application with a background check form, including my social security number. This felt unnecessary since I had already applied online and no job offer was on the table.
Interview:
Lack of Engagement: The interviewer displayed minimal eye contact and recorded my answers on a laptop for an "escalated review" by the owner who wasn't present. This impersonal approach made the interview feel less interactive.
Misrepresentation of Role: The interview focused on a commission-based position, while the initial job description clearly stated a full-time salary. This wasted my time and raised concerns about transparency.
Overall Impression:
The entire interview felt like a waste of time and unnecessary travel expense. $30 round trip from Passaic County. Considering the hot weather and location, a phone interview could have been used as a pre-qualifying step before scheduling an in-person meeting. The process felt outdated and inconsiderate of applicants.
Recommendation:
Apply at Smart Start Academy with caution. Be aware of potentially long commutes, unnecessary paperwork, and a lack of transparency about the position's structure.
