I have been working at Solar Turbines full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The opportunities and people. There are so many forms of finance that you shouldn’t feel stagnant even though we are in a “back office” function. Finance is heavily touted and is part of all the customer facing decisions.

    Cons

Resource constraints. They try to operate as lean as possible and because we’ve been successful at it for a couple of years they believe they can keep it up. Now some people are looking elsewhere from being burnt out.

    Advice to Management

    Grow the finance team

I have been working at Solar Turbines full-time for more than 19 years

    Pros

Pays the bills, Bonus when it is paid, used to have great culture so maybe it will come back

    Cons

All the narrative is around anti-male, pro women, LGBT, and they are alienating parts of their workforce. Management calls this diversity and inclusion which if it was, it would be driven to lift all employees up and not push any down. Narrative is getting old. Are people being placed in roles because of gender or race? Or because they are the best candidate?

    Advice to Management

Stop lifting select groups up by pushing others down, be a general proponent of your people.

  5. "Genuine growth opportunity with a company that has local history of more than 90 years."

    StarStarStarStarStar
      Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

      I worked at Solar Turbines

      Pros

Local company owned by Caterpillar. Allowed me to develop technical, leadership and management skills with a diverse team.

      Cons

Benefits are eroding from the very family oriented start as it’s own company to a subsidiary with Cat that has increased out of pocket costs for it’s employees.

      Advice to Management

Grow your people internally. Help share knowledge base before personnel leave the company.

I have been working at Solar Turbines full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

Great people, very good work-life balance, low stress.

      Cons

Software and training support. "On paper" the training and support are excellent, with a help desk and all the "checkbox" required corporate training. However the systems and tasks required to do your job are antiquated and convoluted. Training is word of mouth or obsolete documentation. Everyone does things differently and it can take years to stumble across the right people or understand how the systems work. A lot...

      Advice to Management

Accountability? Skillset Training? You are 30 years behind the lean manufacturing curve. Training, Standard work, TPM, kaizen... There are so many more tools than Six Sigma blackbelts 3 departments removed. It's almost too bad the company profits are high. If profits were lower there would be a desire to improve the fractured status quo. The revolving door job policy is not helping. It's great to have mobility but with...

        Pros

Harbor Drive location is a fun, historic and interesting place with an incredible amount of manufacturing. Fun to walk around Little Italy or the waterfront at lunch.

        Cons

Flooding during high tide and rains.

        Advice to Management

Try to maintain the Solar culture over the Cat culture.
