Toxic Culture & Nepotism

Pros

Onsite cafeteria and generous benefits package. You have an opportunity to get free/discounted hearing aids for family members. Many lower-level managers and employees are great people and contribute to a positive culture. Individual teams are hard working and care about their work.

Cons

Don't expect to get paid for the work you're doing - you will be asked to absorb the tasks of others without a pay increase. There is a lack of career opportunities and promotions are unattainable. The Chief "People" Officer is a joke and completely out of touch with reality. Consider her the perpetrator of an unfair, hypocritical company culture. She doesn't contribute or follow through on anything unless it's a social event with the CEO, her fiancé. Anyone with relation to the CEO, owner, or executives can expect special treatment and higher salaries. Nepotism thrives here.

Pros

Does AMAZING philanthropy work (Starkey Foundation, Starkey Cares) 20 days PTO on Jan 1 each year (prorated based on when you start in any other month), goes up to 25 after 3 years of being there AMAZING insurance and benefits 401k matched each paycheck headquarters just redone in 2022 onsite cafeteria, decent meal for $6 (used to be $5) coworkers are all super nice everyone was willing to help with any questions

Cons

Retail team is always the first to take a hit in layoffs or furloughs ... I was furloughed after 3 months with no call back date, I don't think they will bring anyone back No communications between different departments, you are in your own bubble Over onboarding, didn't use tools I was introduced to Very quiet about updates Starkey seems to be very top heavy, they have a lot of "higher up" people with big salaries, not enough people doing the actual work where I was at

Pros

Good people in some teams. Nice life-work balance.

Cons

The culture is getting worse everyday: lack of transparency, egomaniacal and clueless leaders, unfair salaries, lack of development opportunities, hypocrisy at all hierarchical levels.

Pros

Salary and commission plan started good but leadership started ‘fixing’ that three years ago....basically was a designed pay cut. Nice campus. Good technology but poor quality. Customers were generally great to work with.

Cons

Leadership is a snake pit and both pres and ceo have some serious skeletons in their respective closets. Company is way behind in direct to consumer which will be a major distribution channel in years to come. Politics...matters more if you’re “in” and not as much how well you do your job. Employees who donated to their sham of a foundation were favored over those who didn’t. Horrible work/life balance if you work in sales or marketing. Locker room like sales atmosphere.

Pros

Awesome coworkers, good opportunity for a first job out of college. Good medical benefits with an on-site free clinic.

Cons

Where to begin?! There are so many “C” suite employees for a mid sized company, it’s incredibly top heavy. Middle management blindly follows orders without question of the moral implications for their employees. If you are good at your job, you can expect your work load to double with no increase in your pay. There aren’t opportunities for advancement in the company unless you are a well liked yes man or have dirt on the president or CEO. The amount of allegations of poor treatment, sexual harassment, and less than savory business tactics are enough to make your head spin. The handling of employees that were not in furlough during COVID was abhorrent as they worked double the hours to cover for everyone else that were not there with their actual pay being cut in half. Hundreds of employees with long standing tenure were unceremoniously laid off to “right size” their spending on salary and the number of women and older people laid off was laughably obvious. No diversity, good old boys club, and the guilt trips for asking for raises and opportunities was extremely toxic because the company line was, we are a family here and if you don’t like how we do things we have plenty of doors to the building, you can see yourself out.
