Pros

If you’re an LGBTQ+ person struggling to break into the charity sector or just the workforce in general, this is a great place that will force rapid growth in experience within a very short period. Alternatively, if you’re perhaps a little more experienced and just looking for something to ease you back into work, it’s a good option as well. With being a small team there’s room to make a big difference, and with very low standards you’re sure to make an impression. I’m summary: a great place to use as a stepping stone to break into where you want to be, but it comes with a sacrifice.

Cons

Despite being an LGBTQ+ charity, Support U does not look after its team members who are in fact are majority, members of the community. Being within the community myself, I experienced more transphobia and homophobia with a far more palpable heartbreaking effect than in other workplaces not within this charity sector. In addition, team members are not looked after with poor pay rates (regardless of what the advert says) and little prospect for progression. In my time as a senior team member, despite my advocacy and hard work, senior management did not want to compromise on matters such as flexible working when people were sick, or in fact want to provide any further support than what management was enforced to do (regular check in meetings). This brings us to the main issue: leadership have a poor understanding of LGBTQ+ issues, often stumbling and saying offence, cruel comments. Team members often are left needing to work thrice as hard to compensate poor work of leadership, including spell checking and re-writing emails. What makes this harder is the fact that the team members who work at Support U sincerely care about the cause and want to do better. During my time, I have seen all team members including myself completely shattered by this place, frequently breaking down at work and needing to take the legally bare-minimum annual leave to recover from extreme burnout. During my time here there have been very serious allegations made and grounds for profound concern. Please, please carefully evaluate your choices before taking the job offer.

The incompetent CEO, the non existent trustee board, the lack of mental health support for staff, no sick pay, no training given for the role, the chairperson who lives in the US and has no idea what they are doing, the instability etc etc....
