Lack of direction

Pros

Swift gave me the opportunity to move into new roles and learn new aspects of the business. I went from the sales side to the editorial side which gave me the knowledge, experience and confidence to move on to my own venture. I was never bored working there.

Cons

Management did not have a clear direction of where they wanted to company to go. They were always changing their minds as to what the priority was. They tried to react to the changing environment with the latest technology but always seemed to be one step behind. It could get very frustrating at times.

Pros

• Great learning experience best used as a paid internship — don't let managment know that though. • Relative freedom to write what you want • You're right near Lake Tahoe and Reno

Cons

• Low pay — forever • Shaky newspaper revenues that often lead to editorial layoffs • Sketchy hiring: typically this company (Swift Media) will hire directly out of college or close to it. Reporters stay on until they find out there is no financial future in the company and then they'll exit (not necessarily to larger papers). The company repeats this process about every two years, about the time it takes for a reporter to see the writing on the wall and head out.

Used to be a nice place to work, even if the pay was lacking.

Pros

Employees are great people. Job duties can be fun and creative.

Cons

Company underpays most positions. Upper management doesn't know how to maintain or grow revenue in a dying industry. Company would rather hire micro-managing upper management , reduce benefits, or overpay for ugly remodels than give employees raises or develop and utilize staff talents and ideas to potentially increase sales and revenue.
