Pros

The anti-racist mission of the program is great; they deliver quality services to youth and are centered in making decisions and leading services based on the needs of the youth and families they serve; people in the organization are dedicated to social justice. From direct service employees to Assistant Directors, many folks go in the field to support.

Cons

As an SC, you do a lot of fieldwork (weekends and nights), especially when AmeriCorps Members turn over (only a 1 year contract). Could be good for you if you want that direct organizing and advocacy experience. However, the org is making changes in their structure and increasing salaries, which will hopefully lead to more long-term employees, with great benefits and not so long hours. When it comes to top leadership (director and deputy), their management styles are Laissez-faire, which is good for certain people, but not this organization. Younger employees need more direction. Leaders just need to be quicker in decision-making and hold people accountable so their folks are trained properly --> trickle down affect.

Pros

Organization dedicated to anti-racism, lots of opportunities for AmeriCorps members to learn and network.

Cons

A lot of work and under-staffing prevents any manager from feeling like they have a personal life. Lots of comp time earned, but its hard to actually use. Dismal opportunities for growth as a manager. I anticipate the org will be experiencing changes (hopefully for the positive) with ongoing changes in leadership.

Pros

Great position to gain exposure to all aspects of program management. The company does its best to promote from within. You will be doing great work with the families and youth you serve.

Cons

You will be short staffed, as your staff serve 1year americorps terms. When you are short staffed, some managers are not as willing to step in and help, and this means that you will be working from 8:30am to as late as 11pm, weekends included. There is more of a deal with it type of vibe. The organization does become very clicky.
