Pros

I am lucky enough to have been part of MATR in the early days. I was focused on creating a successful B2B business, Third Space Learning, which now delivers one-to-one teaching to thousands of pupils each week in schools across the UK. I loved my time at MATR for a few reasons: 1) The business model: At Third Space long-term commercial success can only be achieved by delivering a positive impact in each of the schools that the company works with - no impact, no renewal. The grit and tireless drive that's required when building a successful, sustainable business feels worthwhile when you are ultimately focused on creating an organisation that supports the education of (mainly disadvantaged) children 2) My colleagues: I had the pleasure of working with thoughtful, committed, funny colleagues, many of whom have become close friends. While making friends isn't obligatory, working alongside people I respected was a pleasure 3) Progression: I entered the business at a junior level and over the next couple of years my work was rewarded with rapid progression. MATR is run as much as possible as a meritocracy. Commit to your work and deliver results and you'll be rewarded 4) Culture: The CEO drives an ambitious yet supportive culture. This is crucial as it avoids a "cut throat"/"up or out" culture yet still creates an organisation that strives for excellence

Cons

- Work/life balance: go into MATR with your eyes wide open. I had a truly wonderful experience but you must make sure you're inspired by the mission/problems that you're going to be solving because you'll need to work hard. Please don't join if you're only half interested - you won't enjoy it. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves sometimes.

High levels of ownership, low levels of support

Pros

- Some of the best people I've worked with - Good team culture - Plenty of responsibility

Cons

- Very little career progression - One or two incredibly rude/abrasive senior staff - Some well meaning friendly managers, but no actual professional support, which with responsibility levels can be hugely stressful - Zero training outside of 'on the job' day to day stuff - No HR staff means no conflict resolution
