Pros

I very much enjoyed the work and the technical challenges I faced. The travel benefits were pretty awesome too!

Cons

Some of the senior management were hard to work with and the office politics game was something you had to be on top of.

Thanks for taking some time to share your experiences with Veeco. Glad you enjoyed the work, technical challenges, and travel. Hopefully, you made some great memories in neat places around the world. It's unfortunate you mention difficulties working with senior management and office politics. Our challenges in supporting our customers are enough without navigating those kinds of issues. If you have specific examples or ideas you'd be willing to share that can help us be better, please reach out. You can contact me at bwright@veeco.com or Bob Bradshaw and rbradshaw@veeco.com. Best of luck in your new adventures, wherever they may take you. Best, Brenden

Pros

Good Technology that is dying due to resignations of all the amazing technology guys. Good Engineers that are resigning every week due to zero bonus, negative growth (promotions and then demotions due to reorg) and 60+ hours work week.

Cons

Worst workplace I have ever worked for. This company is full of greedy, arrogant VPs who are continuously lying to senior management regarding market share, product performance, competitive scenario, customer feedback etc. just to keep their job safe. Huge investments and failures with ALD (Freemont Acquisition), Power Electronics, PSP (Horsham Acquisition) are clear example of that clueless-ness of Senior Management and deceitful nature of VPs/ GMs. Candidates should think 1,000 times before joining this wannabe Semiconductor company in East Coast. In the beginning, It may offer good salary to grab talents from Silicon Valley but then employees get stuck with incompetent management, zero bonus, constant fear of lay offs and negative morale. 3 big lay offs in last 6 months, 30+ resignations in last 3 months and multiple rejected offers are clear example of the ugly situation at Veeco. Read all the reviews on Glassdoor (except fake ones), talk to past employees before joining this company and if you have already joined this deathbed then try to run as fast as you can and as quickly as you can !

Run and Don't Look Back

Pros

Good people to work with at the individual contributor level.

Cons

Veeco is disfunction personified. Senior management are liars, unfair and genuinely don't care about people. A few career-minded individuals rise to the top for no clear reason other than their ability to schmooze and tell stories. 7 layoffs in 4 years; 4 GMs in 4 years; 5 HR director in 5 years, the list goes on and on. MOCVD business unit has over 300 employees in early 2012 and now it's down to ~120 people or so (and it keeps shrinking). Hires rejects from other bigger capital equipment companies to be the 25th senior directors or vice presidents in the hope to revitalize its business. The only way to save Veeco is by firing its CEO and President who perpetrate a culture of fear, distrust and extreme politics among its employees. More and more resorting to 'financialization' of its business instead of investing in things that matter, such as RnD and innovation.

Pros

Good technology. Some colleagues are nice, knowledgeable & hardworking.

Cons

too many to list. Poor management, no leadership and visions. Multiple M&A failures with hundreds of millions dollars loss yet senior management takes no responsibility, instead to have multiple layoff of employees. Lot of politics among senior management. Nepotism. No career path.

Pros

After working in the high tech / capital equipment / semiconductor world for many years, I find Veeco's culture to be a breath of fresh air. The environment is excellent - great executive sales and service leadership, no hidden agendas, clear objectives and a team that is built to drive additional value for both internal and external stakeholders. I can see the Executive Team has spent the last several years strengthening the management bench and fostering a culture of trust while having fun at the same time! The Senior Management Team communicates well and is not just focused on quartely results but ... growing the company organically and via M&A as well. Enough structure and processes to be held accountable as a publicly-held company, but not too rigid or structured that kills innovation, progress or speed! The "team" approach at Veeco is great - people looking to make a difference, provide world-class products and differentiated technology without all the baggage of employees constantly worrying about an old-school "CYA" mentality. You can really voice your opinion and make a difference at Veeco. The company continues to invest, build engineering and spend where needed! Management has right-sized operations and facilities in a thoughtful and respectful manner.

Cons

It's not Silicon Valley, but is that a con? It's the semiconductor industry but I presume those looking at Veeco already know about the nature of capital equipment and semiconductors! The management is doing a better-than-above-average job of building businesses that help to weather the segments that are cyclical. 401K and Health Benes are better than average.
