Pros

Wanderu is NOT a start-up based on a fad or an idea to build the next social network. It has a solid business model and has seen steady growth over time. It is powered by smart and passionate people that know the industry, care about the product, and are focused on serving customers. The culture is great because it is filled with caring, down to earth, diverse, and responsible people. Wanderu has been a great fit for my life and I enjoy the challenges I get to tackle every day. My work directly impacts customers. I have grown as an engineer and continue to do so as the company grows; it is a great place to grow a career.

Cons

Working for a smaller company or a start-up is not for everyone. You have to be the type of person who enjoys taking on challenges and responsibility. It's a fast-paced environment and the structure of projects are not like those in larger corporations. You have to be ok driving the bus while you fix it, so to say.

Pros

Initially, what drew me to Wanderu was the mission. Polina and Igor had identified a gap in the travel industry, and there was huge potential to innovate and create some interesting solutions. I was also drawn to the company's work environment. It fosters fast decision making without the need for long approval chains, and places strong emphasis on user-centered design. My experience at Wanderu has been transformative. I’ve been able to grow not only as a designer, but also as a leader. It has been, and continues to be, a valuable learning experience in my career. I’m proud to collaborate with our powerful team of talented entrepreneurs and engineers. At Wanderu everyone has a voice, and good ideas are heard and supported. I’m very excited to see what’s next for our Wanderu family. Big things to come!

Cons

Because we are a small team, we have to be extra smart/careful about prioritization. So sometimes certain projects have to sit on the back-burner for a while until it makes sense to pick them up.

A startup with a mission

Pros

Wanderu is one of those places where you have to believe in the mission to succeed there. The travel industry has some big players but Wanderu is tackling the challenge of ground travel, something Trip Advisor, Kayak and others have neglected. In my four years of employment at Wanderu, I have learned much about what it takes to start a company, run that company, drive to success and the challenges that come along the way. Wanderu's executive team has done an excellent job of inspiring people to follow our founders' vision, finding the appropriate funding/VCs and seeking out new opportunities to continue our growth. Along the way, we have created a small, efficient team of highly motivated and intelligent developers, designers, deal closers and customer servicers. We all enjoy every aspect of the business and we frequently collaborate across those roles to make ourselves more efficient. To help in that process, we have quarterly hack weeks with prizes for the biggest impact project. We don't have a swanky office with sleep pods or wall-length TVs but simply because we operate in a cost-conscious manner. We have dashboards for keeping track of important stats, a Nintendo, Wii and Sega Genesis that have been donated by employees. A couple times a year, we go out on hike/ski trips. We are a bunch of foodies and have a handful of potluck dinner events throughout the year as well.

Cons

Working at a startup, not just Wanderu, is not for everyone. We don't do many nights/weekends any more but we are a 24/7 business. There will be times where we need to put in some extra work or things will unexpectedly break. The good part of that is we have each other's back.
