Gender Discrimination - Alive and well at The Teaching Company

Pros

Good, quality product with loyal customer-base, data-drive decisions and good customer service.

Cons

2015? Not at The Teaching Company. Working there is more like an episode out of Mad Men from the 1950s. Gender discrimination is pervasive and starts at the top. In fact, the CEO made gender discriminating comments about a specific employee at a company-wide meeting in September. Have any other executives recognized or condemned his comments publicly? Nope. Current leadership and HR seem too inexperienced to handle gender issues.

Thank you for sharing. This perception is very concerning. What you are describing is not the type of environment or views we want to have at The Teaching Company. We care for all of our employees and are saddened that your perception of Gender Discrimination may exist. Over the past month the leadership team and HR are taking many steps to enhance our culture of inclusion. Examples include programs applying management training and development around company practices to promote diversity, inclusion involving insights about different cultures, and reinforcing hiring, promotion and workforce management practices to all employees. We remain committed to our environment of continuous improvement and inclusion. We embrace diversity. The Teaching Company will start and continue these programs around these initiatives going forward. We also encourage all of our employees to discuss concerns with their supervisors, HR, or with our CEO directly via our open door policy, or if they prefer to share concerns anonymously, via our hotline. Thank you for letting us know your concerns! We hope to earn your trust again.

"Like a family"

Pros

As a member of PD I enjoyed my day-to-day job activities and the wide variety of content was fun to work on. There are also many gifted and dedicated employees who I enjoyed working with.

Cons

If you ever hear a company culture described as, "like a family," RUN. This is certainly true, but only in the most toxic ways. Upper management regularly gaslights employees, and has a proven track record of ignoring (and at times supporting) racist and sexist behaviors. Don't waste your time going to HR, they will give lip service and then take 0 actions. There were multiple times where I was made to feel genuinely uncomfortable and/or unsafe and when this was communicated to management/HR no action was taken. When work-related issues arise the general consensus seems to be that it is your fault personally. Never mind poor schedules, under-staffing, or ill-prepared content. It is on you to make sure nothing fails. And if it does you're on the line. Also? Subpar pay, benefits, and a major lack of career growth trajectories.
