Pros
Pay is above average for engineers from traditaionl industry
Cons
- Cutthroat coworkers. Initially they pretend to be your friends and ask about your personal stuff. Once they know you are easy to deal with and you don't have any higher level managers to back you up, they start to belittle and bully you. They are doing this to you because they want you to quit so that they can take over your portion of work and further secure their positions, This is very disgusting culture. - Managers are not technical. They joined Geely in the early days when Geely was a copycat car company. Some were originally from BYD. They have never received proper education. They believe in the political struggle culture of the Chinese grassroots. They like to conduct obedience tests on subordinates. They always over strech new guys. Their strategy is to hire a bunch of people to work on same or similar topics so that they can have fierce competition against each other. This is the secret sauce for success in this company. - Long hours. Some managers always schedule group meetings after 7PM. They don't want you to go home early. The expectation is to work at least 10 hours a day and work on Saturdays too. Your whole life is sold to this company. - Location is terrible. The nearest big city is 2 hours away - Hatred against the West. They tend to think the Chinese EV industry is a great achievement and they look down up on the west. They think all other OEMs, BMW,. VW, Honda, Toyota, Ford, GM are useless and inefficient. They think they are so much better. Some manager use this nationalist sentiment in deparment meetings to promote hard work from engineers. - Strong tie with the government. This is a private Chinese company. But essentially it has strong tie with Chinese Communist party. It could be a shell company from the government, because state owned companies are inefficient and hard to let go people, it is also difficult to find investments from overseas. - Very hard for lower level engineers. No support from managers because they don't know anything. They tend to give you a fancy idea pop up from their head and let you to realize it like you are some kind of magician. No support, no resouces, no collabration from other teams. They would say, call your friends at xxx. Buy your friend at BYD a lunch. Go out have a drink with your friend at CATL,,,,,If you don't do well, then it is a good excuse to get rid of you.... - Not transparent. They tend to cut you out of important decisions. Very hard to communicate, You are not allowed to ask questions, you only listen and finish whatever the manager or your coworker throw at you.
