Smoke and mirrors...

Pros

Friendly people. Social atmosphere. Nice, inviting space in a pleasant part of town.

Cons

RP prides itself on it's friendly office culture and trying to do things differently, and it's got that in spades. But there is a bit of a brainwashed cultish vibe to the place, and a sort of rudderless feeling despite all the bluster about growth and creativity and doing great work. There are a lot of naive employees that make all sorts of bad decisions, sliding by with the "we do things the RP way" without even knowing industry-proven methods. Additionally, the office is continually taken over by other companies' offsite meetings and loud events which make it hard to do actual work. This, and the rotating groups of 12 unpaid interns, makes the office look a lot busier than it actually is. Behind that curtain is a small group of people trying to do actual work on lackluster projects.

Respect the interns....

Pros

Fun culture! Sometime free food and booze, great people, beautiful space in a fun part of town.

Cons

I cannot understate the gap between the respect given to a full time (paid employee) and an intern. Although the intern program is well structured and makes it easy to jump in. You will be asked to do a lot of thankless work. I personally helped out with a ton of different projects throughout my time here and was only thanked a handful of times, whereas many paid employees coworkers got standing ovations for work that I helped with and didn't get even a name mentioned. Also there is a lot of pressure to work on an intern project and while this is a great way to apply learning it can also be extremely thankless and getting help can be frustrating. You have to constantly bug people to get things done for you and jump through all kinds of hoops into order to push progress. Also forget doing a redbit, they don't let interns speak at them, but no one told me that when I first asked. They just strung me along until the last week where a caring employee finally told me that it wasn't happening after I had prepared my material.

Pros

I worked at redpepper for 3 years and can't say enough great things about it. I left only because my husband's job forced us to leave Nashville. Some highlights: - Amazing culture: leadership values personal growth, and they'll invest in your growth if you take the initiative. I'm a strategist but wanted to learn more about illustration; redpepper paid for an Adobe CC subscription for me and encouraged me to pursue it. Diverse perspectives are appreciated, and sharing contrary opinions is encouraged, in the spirit of growing and making better work. - AWESOME company events like the annual canoe trip, Pepperpalooza, and Createathon - Work is challenging and interesting; a diverse set of clients makes for days with lots of variety - You're treated like an adult, encouraged to be physically present in the office when you can but allowed the flexibility to set your own work schedule...and you're trusted to get work done. - Pay and benefits are better than other ad agencies in town (I interviewed at several before taking a job at redpepper). Benefits include health and dental insurance, paid family leave, profit sharing, and unlimited vacation time (!!!).

Cons

- If you don't buy into redpepper's culture, truly embrace its values, and, most importantly, take initiative to get something out of the work environment, you probably won't like it. You also might be one of the reviewers that criticized the company for being "cultish." People here are close, but it's not because they're all exactly the same - they share the same workplace values, actively participate in redpepper's culture, build strong relationships with coworkers, and believe redpepper is a special place. - The company is experiencing some growing pains; processes can be inefficient and often change from one project to the next. But that's simply the reality of working at a smaller-but-growing company...and in my experience, process changes have been made because improvements have been made. Which is a good thing.
