      Business outlook

      Pros

Good starting salary post-grad, pretty good benefits too.

      Cons

Honestly, the program is an unorganized mess. Can potentially stunt your career growth if you’re not strategic.

      Pros

decent pay, easy work, union, great coworkers

      Cons

No room for advancement, shift/days off can change any time, daily work assigned based solely on seniority, boring, jobs can disappear any time congress decides to stop funding

      Not kidding, look elsewhere.

      Project manager
      Current employee
      Philadelphia, PA
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

      Decent offices? Free trains? Holidays?

      Cons

One of the least agile companies responsible for so much vital infrastructure. Toxic management and HR at every level. Career progression is opaque. Organizational change, impossible despite obvious needed improvements. Company moves as quickly as an iceberg. Work from home opportunities gutted despite that you could easily be working at home. Despite some nice, hard-working people, there is a prevailing culture in which incompetent, and/or lazy co-workers look to pass the buck, and blame others so to buoy themselves. Despite tenets of accountability and "excelling together," all insistence on accountability rolls downhill.

      Do Better, If You Can

      Anonymous employee
      Current employee
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Pay is decent, and they have an ok healthcare plan

      Cons

Overworked employees, constantly understaffed, constantly stressed, they can never get their paychecks done correctly the complete ineptitude is beyond comprehension. The consistency of management not actually giving a care is clear, they never seem to be able to answer questions professionally but rather they beat around the bush and never give clear answers. When you bring an issue up they constantly pass the buck and take no accountability but rather put all blame onto OBS and consistently looking for ways to write them up for missing or over looking the smallest of things. The amount of negativity that is given to the OBS team makes one to think their value and worth knowing they have no value in excelling or even have opportunities available to them to advance within the company (growth and development in this company is not a thing). The amount of racism, favoritism, and interoffice relations makes one wounded if they are running a dating service or a business. Management clearly is intolerant of OBS but OBS is literally the heart of this company even though they are treat the worst.

Will learn a lot, but absolutely awful work environment with burnout guaranteed

      Sr. software engineer
      Current employee
      Washington, DC
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Lot of opportunities to learn, but you will be expected to work weekends, holidays, with zero comp time or respect for work-life balance.

      Cons

Amtrak is luck of the draw with regards to management. If you're lucky, you'll get a manager who will, at bare minimum, ask you what is going on when someone escalates over your head. In general, they do not, and you're lucky if you go one week without someone escalating to not your immediate boss, but your boss' boss. Amtrak is one of the most toxic work cultures if you get a manager who throws you to the wolves, and most do. Beware the bait and switch when talking to a manager, as you will not find out what really goes on here. If you feel confident, contact one of the people who interviewed you --NON MANAGEMENT -- to get a feel for what you're walking into to. Come here to get technical experience and, if you can make it, stay 5 years for the Railroad Retirement, then leave. Trust me.
